I realise I'm probably a bit behind the times here, but I've been using smtp.xtra.co.nz quite happily for some time now, although I did hear rumours of it being turned off in the near future. My connection is with Xtra, but my e-mail address is with another provider, and no, I can't send through them. Tried to send an e-mail from my T-Stick today but it was rejected, same thing on my home Xtra DSL connection. Changed to send.xtra.co.nz, added in authentication settings, and everything works as it's meant to.

So what I guess I'm asking is, if you're not using send.xtra.co.nz, outgoing won't work anymore, right?

I think SMTP.xtra.co.nz is still working? At least it's still working here at work through my Xtra account(think we are running Snap/Citylink here)

Today emails stopped working for me too.
Heaps of our customers are ringing me saying why can't I email?? & guess what, they are all Xtra customers.
When I called YahooXtra the rep explained it something like this: "If you don't have an Xtra email address then you will be blocked & you should talk to your domain provider & switch to them".. Thanks for the heads up.

"Sending of message failed. The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server smtp.xtra.co.nz failed. The server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections. Please verify that your SMTP server settings are correct and try again, or contact the server administrator."

Looks like it's gone. Just tested at my mother-in-laws place and was rejected. As she has a Orcon email address on Xtra broadband I just set it to mail.orcon.net.nz, use port 587 and she can send mail again..

Outsource to monkeys, get these results.

IMO, hit xtras call center, and hit it hard with calls about it.

Also, for those of you using a third party email address and trying to send the emails via Telecom's smtp server YOU HAVE REGISTERED THE THIRD PARTY ADDRESS WITHIN THE WEBMAIL, HAVEN'T YOU?

This is not a new requirement, actually something I posted about back in 2008: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/freitasm/4703

Interesting assertion. If it's by design, and not a fault, aren't you going to screw with your own stats?

The SMTP service on smtp.xtra.co.nz appears to be down completely.

From Telecom/Xtra DSL connection:
telnet smtp.xtra.co.nz 25
Connecting To smtp.xtra.co.nz...Could not open connection to the host, on port 25: Connect failed

From our connection (not Telecom/Xtra):
telnet smtp.xtra.co.nz 25
Trying 210.54.141.2...
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused

Slingshots limiting is by their design, but from a customer perspective is a fault - why is this any different? ISP changes stuff, email breaks, customer has no email thru no fault of their own.

Therefore, its a fault.

If it's by design, but there was no communication of this being decommissioned, then it's a fault. People need to know it's not only one person experiencing the problem, but something affecting the user base.

That's fair enough. Why should they be providing SMTP services for people with emails from other providers? If you have an @xtra.co.nz address then yes it should be a fault.

Because they arbitrarily decided to censor the internet and block access to other peoples port 25, and in the past it was considered good practice to use the SMTP of your ISP, there will still be people configured that way and they have a duty to make changes without interfering with the use of the emails by those people. Its not like they dont have logs or anything of what customers and email addresses are hitting the server to contact about it.

Maybe you also need to update "It's simple to do it, just follow these instructions." link

If Xtra has trashed  the smtp.xtra.co.nz function there are going to be a lot of moms and pops out there that won't be able to send email now and will have no idea what do do to fix it..

If the intention was to do what you mean then they would block BOTH smtp.xtra.co.nz and send.xtra.co.nz, and that doesn't seem to be the case.
