Hmm, high ping time, speed well below sync, thats also a worry, high packet loss maybe.

Earlier you mentioned running a new cat5 from the demarc to the modem, good idea but only if you also install a central filter with it, I suggest you do all that then re evaluate you situation, but I would suggest you will be well up on where you are now.

A central filter splits the telephone/broadband signals where the cable enters the house correct? If so I see the need for my landlord to get one for their line (which I am currently using), and will pass on the recommendation.
Will I need a central filter for the new line that is getting installed in the next few days? (naked dsl second line which therefore has no landline signals that would interfere with broadband signal)

Hi, if you are not using pots (ie no voice/phone/fax devices) across the line which is the case with naked, then you dont need the filter. However you would be well advised to disconnect all the existing house wiring and run a new line from the demarc to the modem with no other house wiring connected.

To reiterate, if its a naked connection then no filter is needed, but remove any superflous cabling.

You can plug the house wiring back in after you move out if that makes your landlord any happier.

Update: The new line is installed (copper pair-new cat 5 cable-router) and getting better speeds, but still not great, and have the same high attenuation and relatively low sync speeds...

SNR Margin:10.0 11.9 db
Line Attenuation:42.8 26.0 db
Data Rate:7024 893 kbps
Max Rate:7456 885 kbps
POWER:18.1 11.3 dbm
CRC:11 0

This is on a different router, which leads me to believe that the problem lies with our connection to the exchange (as all other possibilities have been ruled out to my knowledge), so what's the next step should I take?

Also huge pings to speedtest servers are still present (with the exception of PNorth which is the only server which seems to give a decent ping).

Hi, well you can now proclaim that its not a wiring issue on your side of the demarc.

I just noted your address in the original post, and it is confusing when reading the map, but it appears that you will not be cabinetised. Currently I estimate you are around 2.5km from Mt Eden exchange so probably 2.8km of cable, which would be just on 40dB attenuation. So maybe not too far from what you are getting.

Based on 40dB you should expect a sync rate of 6-7Mb/s, so your probably getting all you will ever get until you do get cabinetised.

As for the high ping, I guess snap's peering has them bounce that one via LA or somewhere to get to that server.

good enough for me, at the moment

never got an 'A' grade before :D

Anyway I think i'll chain myself on top of the proposed cabinet site when chorus comes to install it until they agree to connect me to it...

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Another question, would it be unwise for me to turn interleaving off due to the distance from the exchange?
