While I like to soft reset my Pocket PC now and then, I do so because of memory usage, not because of cell site registration.

Also, a soft reset on a Pocket PC is just the case of poking the stylus in the reset hole. On a mobile phone it is just the case of power cycle - off/on again. There's no need to send it in for a "reset" to fix this.

The only thing I can think is the rep didn't want to say "we actually know there's a problem with this specific model and we need to flash the firmware on the phone again", which is arguably harder for some to understand then simply saying "your phone needs a reset".

sbiddle:
What a load of rubbish.

Explain to me then why it works on a daily basis. Granted not on every mobile dealt with but a repetitive number, enough to show a pattern.

As I said its not a fix all but a contributing factor for some phones.

And forgive my explanation of connectivity, the majority of people don't really give a damn about the reason behind it ,rather just want a fix where possible... Hence simplified.

I admit I don't know the intricate details of exactly why it happens in every case (as there's a large amount of contributing factors) just that it does happen from first hand experience.

I queried this too, as I also occasionally reset my Apache for program lockups etc... I even had my Apache serviced after breaking the screen :-( The Call Centre then told me that I would have to go to the Telecom shop to have my "account and settings reset". I am heading there at lunch time, even though I feel like I am wasting my time.
I have found a few other people that are having the same problems - maybe it is a local problem. I need to get out of my "cell' ;-)

One person with a phone in rural marlborough is probably not a scientifically accurate result.
I can send a text between two 027 phones here, and from pressing send on one, have it in ten seconds on the other (that includes the sending transmission time from the originating phone.

Sometimes this can be delayed. And we often hear of hours or days of delays from both networks subscribers...

Delayed messages I can almost swallow, but not non-delivery.

I went in to a local Telecom shop as requested by the call centre and they said, "Oh yeah - I have that problem too". Apart from being helpful, they were not aware of the fault that the call centre had told me about, or could offer any suggestions. Looks like I have fallen victim to the call centre "Manual of Random Responses". Wasting my time.

Text messaging was more reliable 10 years ago. I think we have all been worn down to accept the unacceptable. What next, 148:1 contention ratios on ADSL?

It sounds like you do need to have the phone's settings reset.

nooooooooooo its not phone settings. Why would any body think this.

Once handset advises SMS sent thats it. Thats all the handset has to do. Its then up to the networks.

I have not had delivery problems (that I know of!) during the last few days, but nor have any of the missing messages arrived. I have talked to a lot of people about this and have learned of instances where messages have turned up several months later! I don't think I have ever received a message from overseas to my phone. I might chase this and test a little more diligently...

Don’t SMS messages expire after a set time if they are not received from the network by the users handset?

Cheers

Yup - I was surprised... from the network point of view, it would be better to delete the messages rather than point out to someone that their messages had been delayed.

Correct there is no way any provider in NZ would hold onto the content for that long

I'll check with them tomorrow - I am sure one person (at least) said ~6 months.

Don't know about Vodafone but I know Telecom's SMSC holds onto the text messsage and keeps trying for 5 days to push it out to the handset.

The SMSC deletes it from the network after 5 days. So months later.... not possible in NZ...

The only possible thing, and even then its a stretch, is if an overseas network holds onto the msg for longer and doesn't successfully pass it to TNZ until after a large length of time, then TNZ delivers it withtin the 5 days.... but considering overseas Networks are bound to be on a bigger scale they'd have even more incentive to ditch messages after 5-7 days.

Its not a guaranteed service, just like so many other utilities/services that telecommunications companies the world over aren't guaranteed.
