NonprayingMantis: If it's AT&T then it is possibly locked to their network.

ETA: looks like it's GSM only, not WCDMA, so suprised voice is working at all.

If the phone is locked you will need to get it unlocked, but best to check if it will work on XT before that. They have a IMEI checker online
http://www.telecom.co.nz/mobile/ournetwork/phonecompatibility
which will give you an indication, although not always 100% as relies on the underlying dataset being correct which I think is supplied by the manufacturers and sometimes errors can creep in.

gehenna: Very curious that Telecom would send you to Geekzone rather than spend the time to help you themselves. Pretty poor effort on their part really. Which is at odds with my recent experiences with them. Guess it's just who you deal with on the day eh!

This is why carriers don't like dealing with imported devices

The phone is not locked, it can be used for voice and SMS, so this rules out locking.

http://developer.att.com/developer/device_detail.jsp?id=6.3_v1_7600118 says it's 3G, as expected from all later AT&T handsets.

The solution is to really get to the settings, add the correct APN and then check other settings where they may be linking to "Active APN" or "Preferred APN" or "Default APN" and select the correct one.

Without having seen the phone menus is really hard to help - either for people in a forum or on a call centre. In store would be the best bet, but being an import I don't see stores wanting to do it for free... Also there's no guarantee it will actually work. I have a couple of AT&T smartphones here and know how AT&T link everything together.

you think a carrier should train it's staff on the intricacy's of every single device that they don't even sell?

Would you take your Ford into a Holden garage and expect them to sort any problems out for free?

d1silvia: My settings have different titles/set up i will list what it says and see if you can help me further.

Set Name: TelecomData
Access Name: internet.telecom.co.nz
Auth type: none
Protocol: HTTP
Home URL:  Http://pdaportal.telecom.co.nz
Proxy Address: 0.0.0.0:80
Linger Time (sec.): 300

I think these are your issue.

As Neil and MF said, you should try playing around with the settings.

Access Point Name (APN): wap.telecom.co.nz
Home Page: http://myhomepage
Proxy IP Address: 210.55.11.73:80

Those should work... if it's going to work on your phone.

Otherwise use the Internet APN, and nothing for the proxy address.
