well I might be a bit biased on this, since I did a lot of work (all the way through til 7 am this morning) to launch this product... but I'd say it's better than anything else out there...
the ability to d/l a song on your mobile, then jump on the web, get the same tune, burn it to cd, put it on personal media players is pretty cool..
as for the "play for sure" / drm and pricing thing... juha / jama you have never tried to get access to a publishers catalogue have you? it's a lot more tricky than you obviously think... that's why in some circles the "Big 4" (soon to be 3) record labels, and Pfizer are described as a cartel...
and if you want itunes in nz, write to RIANZ, the record labels, and APRA... they're the ones stopping it from happening... (personally I can't stand ipods)

Felix it is not a dig at you and I agree the download to a PC and a phone for the same price is a great feature. We all know that it is the record companies who dictate what can and can not be done with their 'personal' catalogs. I prefer to say 'no thanks' and will not support any service until they get real and stop gouging which probably means I will never buy a track online. Oh well....

Oh and I love my iPod.

to anyone who says you cant legally get music onto an ipod in NZ, thats just BS.

You can put your own music on
You can put on music that you own the copyright to
You can put on music that has no licencing restrictions
You can put on music that doesnt forbid format-shifting or loading onto portable players.

There is plenty around...

juha: Don't quite see why Telecom can't bump up the bit rates

To use an existing example, check Coketunes (only opens in IE)... same deal and the reason Telecom most probably hasn't used higher bitrates is because I doubt they control it. Just like coketunes...

... which in turn are actually recorded and managed by On Demand Ltd .. here .. who handle all the individual licensing etc for the files and then onsell the whole management service through to some HUGE global names , check On Demmands list of clients.

What I'm trying to say is... I doubt Telecom is in control of the bit rate.. and if they were, it would be a sizeable price difference with what the supplier will charge for different quality.

Again, I'm just guessing and providing a tangible contrast, but if the shoe fits...........

personally I don'tdig DRM in any way what's so ever, those of you that have visited my website will know this...

the DRM is totally governed by the record lables, as is the bit rate...

Well the PC version of a song i downloaded was a 6M 128kb/s wma file and it downloaded nice and quick from the telecom site at 100kb/s.

Unfortunalty the version that i got on my phone is only a 1.5Mb file

a 128kb/s file isn't great enough to blast on the stero connected to the computer and a 1.5Mb file on the phone isn't very good either, I think im gonna stick to ripping CD's to MP3 technically illegal in NZ bacause of restrictive copyright laws but no different to thousands of ipod owners

lol yea i tried to see if i could play it from my phone on my computer..... can copy it across but cant find a player for .koz media files for obvious reasons, thats the idea tho im sure...

What i was trying to point out however was a 6Mb at 128 and a 1.5Mb means that it is effectively encoded at 32kB/s...... which is very low

The Great KOZ file debate again... I reviewed the Sanyo 9000 and got some funky feedback on it from the DRM/CODEC vendors.

Hang on, so the Music Store works like the Sprint one? You pay for tune first with your phone, and then get another download over the Internet? Hmm...

Transfer a song you downloaded to your PC and the KOZ extention is right there...

A quote that appears in your review

From Bennett Ratcliff is uter crap... no idea who he contacted, but I happen to understand that groove's DRM is KOZ and I refer to it as KOZ. And as Teloecom's Music Client expert I'd say I have a bettr view of what the client does than he.

Yeah works almost exactly the same way as the Sprint store... almost

Yeah, well, Ratcliff didn't exactly endear himself to me as he used some pretty strong language in his correspondence and then wasn't able to back it up when I asked for explanation.

Don't understand what the problem was anyway in the first place.
