I'll post some more results when I can, speedtest isn't even loading anymore, and the last reading I got on Telecoms one was 0.04... I'll try again later tonight.

Neil does Telecom monitor the results of the speed tests from users on its network?

Ya that's a bit broken.

http://winmtr.net/winmtr_download/

Grab a copy of mtr and run a test to www.telstraclear.co.nz (I was going to suggest Telecom, but it doesn't respond to pings for me).

That will tell us a bit more about where the problem might be.

I've got no idea if the speedtest results are logged. It's an interesting question and I'll see if I can find out. No promises on what (if anything) I could report back though...

Ham's comment that HDl1 told him he has 7mbits to from the exchange but his modems broken, that's interesting as well...

What test are they doing?  Is it layer 3 or layer 2 on the atm rate of the DSLAM?

Does Telecom actively monitor ATM sync rates?

Also, 7mbits...  with the move to NGN, is that going to become a fault condition with the obligation to deliver 10mbits to 80% of homes?

I let that comment go because I am not 100% convinced that the metric was either correctly spoken by the helpdesk or perhaps taken down by Ham... I'd unfortunately not be surprised at any ISP's level 1 support making less than perfect suggestions about subtle problems.

Any ISP (including Telecom Retail) have access to systems that can show some line stats which I believe include sync speed.

I'm not going to get into a discussion on whether 7mbit means a fault as there are too many variables at this stage to understand... like is he within the modelled 80%? and Is the inhome wiring up to scratch?

Cheers - N

Agreed.  I would also agree with anyone who suggested that this level of problem is on the edge of what level 1 might deal with.

I'd love to see a break down of call reasons for an ISP like Xtra and wonder how many are for far less complex problems.

Yes. Yet in this case Ham is testing .04 v's 7mbit by HD - If I was him I'd be feeling a bit fobbed off as clearly the HD person didn't suggest the simple test you did.

Do those new routers that telecom provide have speed test kit built into them to do local network testing?

I've been playing with AirControl, which has iperf as a tool between radios.  Struck me as a smart sort of thing to have between the users computer and the radio as well.

Sorry my bad.  I was getting well off topic and it was more a general question not related to Ham's problem.

I was simply wondering if there was any policy on this yet in the public space.  As NGN isn't even finished yet, I'd be happy to accept it's way to early to have even developed a public policy, but I was just interested, in a random thought kinda way, if there was policy.

It has come right all by itself now... Back up to 6.xx mbps.

Usually slow speeds I would just put down to congestion, but this seemed too slow for that, and at one point would not even connect when restarting the modem.. Anyway all is good now.

I would check the usage meter to make sure you don't have a spike and run the normal anti virus just to make sure something isn't sending traffic.

Also use mtr and do some baseline tests (which you might print out and keep on hand for next time).

I have had connection problems and very slow speeds with Mobile XT T-Stick since 11 August 2011. Telecom say there are no problems at their end. I am in the Tasman District ............this is my pathetic speed test result

Neil - 14/2 to your server...  where is that server located?

[snipped stuff]

Actually I don't recall where it is exactly... Based on the very short tracert and the times I suspect it's in Akl, probably MDR.

Don't quote me on that though - I'm just inferring from very similar behaviour to other servers I know are in MDR.

Cheers - N

I do.:)
This is relevant to the topic, for Telecom users the speedtest.telecom.co.nz server is located within the core network.
It is in MDR (Central Auckland) though so you will get regional variations.

Speeds to this server should be very good, the only limitation should be NIC as at the time it was only a 100 Meg connection, that was ok at the time but may need to be reviewed now. ( other limitations being OS, TCP, HTTP an apache:))

Neil PM me if you want the contact details of the person who runs it.
