MrCat: Hello :)
I've just become interested in buying this phone and I'd like to use my own MP3s as ringtones. Can this be done?
If not, does anyone know of a Telecom phone that will do this - or does Telecom not allow it as they want people to spend money downloading them? (wouldn't surprise me!)

I dont think this phone can. Some Nokia phones support this feature, ie 3155, 2855, 6155, 6165 and the 6265.

As to Telecom not allowing the use of MP3 ringtones, that is just wrong.

And welcome to Geekzone MrCat.

Thanks nzbnw. I've just been in to Telecom and they said NONE of their phones allow you to upload ringtones from a PC due to, quote "licencing issues" - read 'we want to make money from downloads'. Grrr!

Utter crud.

All the bluetooth and/or  infrared Nokias can for a start (cause I have done it). All the Palm and Windows Mobile units can as well.

Rintones on the mobile?

Sanyos, NOPE, locked to "web downloads", great sounding speakers too and the phones are utterly ruined by this.

Samsungs, Nope (technically possible but VERY hard to do)

Nokias Yes, all the following models and any current allow open access to loading custom rintones via bluetooth and IR 6235, 6155, 3155, 6155, 2855, 3165, 6265.. the rest (older models) are locked off.

PDA's Yes, but various steps need to be followed. for "realmusic" covert to .wma and load onto your device.. the filename needs to contain a space before the .EXT eg "destringer .wma"

I may make a seperate post for this.

Sanyos can also have mp3 ringtones with a bit of effort - particularly the 7400 which I currently own and frequently chop and change mp3 ringtones.

It can also have short videos uploaded to it as well but thats a different story.

For details on the 7400, view this dated but handy post

About this hard on the A920 <------->
But serisouly once you know how to do it, it only takes about 30seconds to load a new one over the data cable

For the a920 see THIS

If you brick your phone using this, I aint responsible,  no harm can be done by looking about the bits of the phone however, just don't change anything!,

Just by doing and following the instructions I had a 100% success with ringtones, and no success with games.
