akia: The firmware for Telecom sourced devices has been certified against all Telecom services (i.e. Roaming, calling, texting, MMS, data and other Value Added services). However a non Telecom sourced device would have generic software and may not work with some of these services.

Roaming is a prime example where a non Telecom sourced device may not work correctly in all destinations. All of our helpdesks will do best efforts to try to resolve your issues but we cannot guarantee anything.

I really appreciate the fact you and some others at Telecom are prepared to provide really helpful information on here, however I do wonder that your reply regarding the use of non Telecom sourced devices is more a point of trotting out the "party line". I'm a proud ex Telecom employee (switching and transmission) and where possible support and defend Telecom. I also know that this sort of thing used to be prevalent especially when all and sundry started marketing cordless phones etc and the associated Telepermit issues.

Are you saying that anyone bringing their smart phone to the "Smartphone network", aka XT, from another network under the current promotion that Telecom is running isn't going to be able to take the full advantage of the XT network since their phone isn't a Telecom provided phone? There is no mention in the advertising that warns prospective customers about this.

I've had a non Telecom mobile phone for about 18 months and my wife has a Telecom mobile phone. The only difference we have noticed is the Telecom branding as the phone boots up and the TWorld link, I've created a short cut to TWorld on my phone.

I've found Telecom's service for setting up non Telecom phones to be excellent. Last week I put a non Telecom phone onto the Telecom network. Within seconds of switching it on I had 4 text messages containing the set up info. It was all up and running within 2 minutes.

So far as prices go I think Telecom is no different to the other two operators, however their range of phones does suck somewhat hence my choice to use a non Telecom device. In fact we will most likely be buying future phones from either of the other two operators to place on the XT network.

Anyway, sorry forgot to introduce myself properly. My name is Wayne and we are just setting up a new importing business here in New Zealand, have been living here 35 years and decided that the bigger telcos need a little competition with respects to Telco handsets.

At this stage we offer 2 degrees and vodafone capable phones and have sourced a supplier that offer phones that will work on the XT network.

I will not post the website as yet, as we are still in setup stages, but i can promise you we are going to be testing our phones to the full extent and see how they actually work on the XT network.

We are only selling phones that work on 2 degrees & Vodafone at this stage and if you would like to know the website just ask. I didn't want to post it in case i was not allowed. We will soon launch with phones if they work fully on telecom. And our prices will be somewhat cheaper than all the telco's.

All our products are backed by a 2 year warranty and 14 day no questions asked money back guarantee.

Once we have tested the phones that we intend on using on the XT network, we will be looking for a couple of people to also help from a customers perspective test these phones. Later we will be looking for a handful of people to test them and you will get the phones totally free.

No "party line" Technofreak, I'm simply saying what is true - we do extensive testing to ensure that all services work on Telecom handsets. We do not stop you from bringing your phone to XT, in fact we encourage it. Most services work for most handsets and people. However you will have the odd operating system that may play funny with a device or have a 'bug' in it and people will expect/demand us to fix it. We have control over our software builds but not other generic builds. We simply do our best to try to resolve these issues where we can.

This is true. For example I have a Windows Mobile 6.5 handset, originally from AT&T. Although it was unlocked by AT&T (it was a review unit), everything worked, except the stored voice mail access number. It was stored in the registry and I was able to change it - but if I turned the handset off I would have to update it again next time it powered up.

Small things like this. Some people may understand, some people will think it's Telecom's problem and demand action - when it's not.

I would like to know why Telecom and Vodafone charge $29.95 for a SIM pack yet 2 degrees sells the same item for $5. It will be interesting to see the price for SIM packs and handset pricing once Callplus/Slingshot start using the XT network as a MVNO.

well for starters on xt you get $10 credit on the sim and a further $10 when you register online, a total of $20

And I note the current off net voice termination rate at 5.88 cents per minute.

The current 2 degrees casual voice prepay rate is 44 cents per minute.
Prepaid pricingWe've kept things simple with our Pay As You Go pricing - there's only one rate for calling and TXTing, no matter what network your friends are on: just 20c per TXT, and 69c per minute (or part minute, also known as 'minute plus minute' pricing) for voice calls.

Thanks for the reply, as I said in a previous post is a pity that we didn't have decent voice and data rates for mobile, in the fixed line space seems to me Callplus/Slingshot are the only telco in the market at this time that are doing anything to lower prices and give consumers a better deal during this current recession.
