Hi

I have been looking at phones overseas as they are cheaper than from Telecom. But will either of these phones work on the XT Network at all?

GSM:850/900/1800/1900MHz WCDMA 900/1900/2100MHz.
Or

GSM 850/900/1800/1900.WCDMA 850/ 2100MHz

Sorry to be a pain, i just dont want to waist my money if it isnt going to work. I cant get a straight answer from telecom or the company i want to buy it from.

The Telecom XT network is 100% WCDMA 850mhz with some 2100mhz site for capacity

No GSM on XT

Yep, so long as it's not locked to a foreign network.

Yep, so long as it's not locked to a foreign network.

And so long as the phone is actually that spec, with different models sold in different countries there are plenty of people who buy handsets unaware they're buying the wrong model simply because somebody has pasted specs from gsmarena which aren't model specific.

Amen to that.

So often you see incorrect specs listed. I got told that a certain model wouldn't work on the XT network when in fact it did.

If you are buying out of the North American market you can be reasonable sure, that so long as the phone is WCDMA (note: NOT CDMA), capable it will work on the XT network.

Be aware as sbiddle points out that there are can be several variants of the same model phone.

So long as you are sure that the phone is 850 WCDMA you should be good to go. Whether or not it is 1900 or 2100 doesn't matter too much as 850 is country wide, 2100 is only used as in fill in some major centres.

You would want a phone with these specifications:

GSM 850/900/1800/1900.WCDMA 850/ 2100MHz

However one of the benefits from buying it at Telecom is that if something goes wrong with the handset we will fix it. We also guarantee that our core services will work with the device.

No need to buy from Telecom when other companies offer 2 year warranty. Telecom prices are way to high. Thank you anyway.

That's fine - was just making sure that people know if you do not buy your phone from a Telecom store we do not guarantee our core services will work. Not all people know this. :)

What cores services do you mean? I've used an imported phone on th XT network without any issues. Have I been missing out on something?

I agree, we have been importing cellphones for the 2 degrees and vodafone network for just over a year without any issues at all. Now we know the correct Frequency for Telecom we will be importing a whole range of new phones. We first have to have them tested, but if all goes well we will be offering phones at half the cost Telecom does.

The firmware for Telecom sourced devices has been certified against all Telecom services (i.e. Roaming, calling, texting, MMS, data and other Value Added services). However a non Telecom sourced device would have generic software and may not work with some of these services.

Roaming is a prime example where a non Telecom sourced device may not work correctly in all destinations. All of our helpdesks will do best efforts to try to resolve your issues but we cannot guarantee anything.
