Personally i find VM annoying to say the least. The first thing I do with a new XT ph is to ring up and get it turned off. If people can't get hold of me then if it's important, they will normally call back.

jbard: I am pretty sure this is not going to happen, look at the current situation:

All the telcos make $xxx from voicemail charges. If one telco drops the charge it is very very likely the other 2 will follow suit to stay competitive.

That basically means they all lose their $xxx income without any benefit to any of them.

On top of this they are all now losing money as it does cost to run a voicemail service.

They still receive inbound revenue when the message is left, and at least like the 1990's the mobile phone owner doen't pay for the VM deposit, something that is still the case in some parts of the world.

I'm on vodafone and don't pay to access voicemail. It is included in my plan.

Not on our plans at work they're not.

I haven't had voice mail since my first cellphone. It's a pain and a text is easier when I'm out of coverage or switched off.

Same here although only from a couple of years ago once I actually found out it was possible, I have always refused to leave messages on Voicemail/Answerphones before, I just find them very uncomfortable to use and never have any idea if people actually get the message, Much more preferable to call back later or send a text for them to read once they have the time.

What's the best way to disable voicemail? Can I disable the call forwards via my phone settings or do I need to ring my provider? I'm with 2degrees but I imagine it's the same for all. Ideally, I'd still like my message to be played so people know they have the right phone but that they can't leave a message. Does anyone offer this?

You can change what number your voice mail redirects to on Telecom in the mobile self service menu.

Under Manage Services.

I think there is a per-min charge to 2Talk since there isn't a NZBestMate option with Telecom as there is with Vodafone.

Or you could setup your own Asterisk VoIP box with either a Telecom landline or mobile and use My Favorites. which is the Telecom equivalent of Best Mate, but not offnet.

If you ring your own mobile number, and push * when you hear the message telling you to leave a message, you'll get to your mailbox - I do this and it uses my included minutes rather than being charged $0.20

I set the number up in my contacts as: +6427xyznnnn (pause) * (pause) [voicemail pin code] and then I get there straight away without any fussing around :)

There's no logic in that, unless you get a response you have no idea whether on not they got the TXT either.

I have the home line VM linked to the cell. Most callers leave a message as they know I get an alert. If 20c is a problem there's always the option of using the nearest landline to recover.

I know I _used_ to be on a plan that didn't charge for listening to VM, somewhere along the line I've ended up on one that doesn't have that. I'll leave it going for the rare instance when it actually _is_ useful, especially seeing as I sometimes get calls that go straight to voicemail without the phone even ringing, despite having good reception.

When VM was free you used to be able to use it to send free voice messages to other people on the same network which was a useful cheat.

Voicemail is $0.20 - AFAIK you can still send messages to other numbers by ringing 083210.

Some of the people here at my work haven't got a clue about how they should use voice mail correctly... Several of them leave entire conversations on my voice mail! (I kid you not - long, long, long voice mail messages rather than a "Hi, got a problem with this, please call me". They don't know when to shut up!

If you are on a network that supports delivery receipts, then at least you know the txt message has been delivered. Whether they choose to read it is of course another matter entirely!!
