The reality (right or wrong) is that the market is demanding more Windows based devices than Palm. This seems to be an NZ thing as Treo 650 was a big seller in the US. No point supporting two similar devices in such a small market when one will outsell the other 3 to 1.

My preference would be the 700P but then I have always liked the Palm OS and like Mauricio I have had a Palm since the Pilot 1000.

I rang telecom on saturday to ask if they had already released the 700wx (as I'd been misinformed that day). I was told that they would be releasing "A" phone on friday coming this week. Is that gonna be it???

I don't know why I'm so eager. I have to wait until the start of december to upgrade anyway!

I had a play with the Palm Treo 700wx yesterday during the Convergence Oceania conference, and the dates haven't changed from "end of this month".

It's a bit different from the Treo 750v:

- stub antenna (not on Treo 750v)
- silver glossy (blue rubber on Treo 750v)
- key seem a bit bigger (smaller on Treo 750v)
- CDMA EVDO (UMTS/HSDPA on Treo 750v)

Note that HSDPA is not enabled on Treo 750v yet, pending an updated ROM.

Otherwise everything else is the same. It looks good. I will probably get one for review in the coming weeks.

No, Friday is the Sanyo 8400. Treo is due mid to late this month (apparently)

I've seen a great Verizon Wireless ad for their CDMA EV-DO service, comparing with Wi-Fi... Basically a train station view from the top with two writings:

- "Wi-Fi here" pointing to inside the station
- "No Wi-Fi here" pointing to outside the station.

Whatever you think, Wi-Fi is a local thing, while cellular data is so much more "liberating"...

Hi geeks,

I popped into the Telecom stand at BBT on yesterday and there was the Treo 700wx on display.

The keys are a different shape which seems to help with those who have larger/stuffed fingertips (mine). I pulled the SD card out of my Treo 650 and slipped it into the SD card slot and then waited for the inbuilt library function to read the contents.

My interest was to see what a video clip looked like. I was able to play a video clip from my SD card through Media Player fine. The sound wasn't going, but there was so much noise on the stand it was hard to tell.

The video display was sharp, but smaller than the 650. Perhaps a mode change might enlargen the picture.

Interesting that the headset socket is still 2.5mm when IPOD's and MP3 players have 3.5MM.

It showed 1X on the top of the screen which I believe means it was connected at the normal CDMA speed of the Treo 650.

I thought it was supposed to be 2X?

I didn't have time to go right over the unit, but if I'll be keen to get this unit when I'm able to upgrade.

Cheers
Bernard

Hi Bernard,

Headset sockets fr *most* phones are 2.5mm. Its been quite a standard for some time, and cellular handsfree units are generally all 2.5mm plugs. You can buy 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapters for aorund $10 to convert to the latter, and they are inline, so are not very bulky at all.

Im not sure what you think 1X is, but there is no such thing as 2X.

CDMA 1X is Telecoms national mobile data network, running at max speeds of 153kbps. The next step is 'EVDO' which is currently running max speeds of 2.4Mbps.

Regardless of this, the Treo 700wx is pre-release, so the model you saw is definitely not 'sales ready', and probably has not got all the customisations required yet to work on EVDO.

Announcements don't mean availability. Companies announce products months or weeks before it's available.
