Does anyone know when this smartphone will be available to consumers?  Any idea on pricing?

Thanks.

Let's see if some of the TNZ people around here can give us some answers?

What about existing Windows Mobile apps not available on 700p?

The Treo 700p wasn't discarded for the New Zealand. Just not announced, if it will ever be.

Hi Mauricio,

Must be late, it's not like you to disown the Palm operating system?

I thought as I read your post there would be something I could hope for, but not from what you say (or don't say is probably closer)

Having used a Palm Vx and separate phone for 5 years then moved to the Treo 650 late last year, my only issue is lack of internal memory for applications. With more applications arriving each week, even a Palm suffers from bloatware.

So I guess the discussion really is .. what is different between the carrier modes of the 700P and the 700wx and where is this taking Telecom?

I understand Mauricio, you probably cannot comment on this unless it is already in the public domain, but your comments would be appreciated if you have something to share.

Cheers
Bernard

Hi Bernard. The 700p and 700w are merely Palm or Windows based versions of the phone. The 700P has not been announced for Telecom NZ, the 700w is due any minute now.

You are asking about carrier modes? But I dont understand...

Cheers

I've indeed used Palm for a long time - started with a US Robotics Pilot, which was then upgraded with those little boards 3COM sold to a Palm Pilot 5000, then to a 3COM Palm Pilot Professional, then to a Palm V, then to a Palm m150, then a Handspring Visor Prism, which then had the Handspring Visorphone GSM module attached to it. It broke and then I decided to buy a Pocket PC with the insurance money instead.

Since then I had a HP iPaq h3970 (still here, for GPS use only), a HP iPaq h4150 (the best performance, form factor), an i-mate Pocket PC Phone (GSM, still here), an i-mate Smartphone2 (GSM), a Harrier Pocket PC Phone (CDMA EVDO), an Apache Pocket PC Phone (CDMA, still here) and an i-mate Jasjar (GSM/UMTS, still here).

I also always have a few demo devices around, some I can't talk about (like the one I am using on Vodfone right now).

Throw in the middle a period with the Nokia 3650 (GSM) and the Sony Ericsson P800 (Symbian UIQ, still here, my wife loves it).

So, I guess I have played a lot with all those mobile OS.

As for the Palm OS... I am sorry, but I didn't see evolution of this OS since the days of Palm V. The Tungsten series is nothing to write home about, and the Palm based Treo doesn' add much in terms of functionality. If you try the Windows Mobile platform you will find a lot of applications, automatic synchronisation of media, real multi-tasking and some interesting developments in the last two year going forward.

As for my current interest in Windows Mobile devices... Push e-mail? Check. Devices with high speed LAN and WAN? Check, Large keyboard? Check. Small keyboad? Check. Rugged devices? Check. Diverse software library? Check.

What is the difference between the Treo 700p and 700wx for the mobile operator? I guess is just how much effort in supporting another platform, and the time to certify and localise the device. Other than this it's just like other mobile phone.

Hi Tony,

>You are asking about carrier modes? But I dont understand...

Yes, I  was assuming you knew the Treo 650 was only  CDMA 1xRTT and the Apache was CDMA2000 1xEVDO (real braodband)

Now the Treo 700wx is also CDMA 800/1900 MHz digital dual-band EvDO and 1xRTT

and so is the Treo 700P CDMA 800/1900 MHz digital dual-band EvDO and 1xRTT.

So both units (700p and 700wx) now use CDMA 800/1900 MHz digital dual-band EvDO (real broadband).

Cheers
Bernard

From what I can see all the above are in the Treo700P, but what you really meant to say was corporate support for Microsoft connections is far and away greater than for the Palm operating system.

I checked a number of the applications running on my Treo and they don't have a Windows Mobile equivalent...  ah such is life in disparate os's.

>(like the one I am using on Vodfone right now).  I thought you were Telecom through and through ...

Cheers

Unlike some zealots that show up here from time to time just to bash the network they are not using, I do have both Telecom and Vodafone accounts and I use both networks - otherwise how could I write balanced opinions about them?

My primary voice device is on Vodafone. I have had the same number for 8 years, why change? As for data, my primary Pocket PC is on Telecom, but I have been using Vodafone HSDPA on my tablet PC (with the vodem and with a Merlin XU870 card).

I am sure Tony knew that. But like Tony, I was also out of sync with your question. I though you were asking about the effort to bring a device to the market. But actually the question was about band usage.

Which applications? You might not find the same application, but similar.

Yip, I sure do know. The Treo 650 is a 3G device (i.e. it uses CDMA 1xRTT which meets the definitions required for 3G). Broadband is not really a term that seems to be applied to mobile much, other than for marketing excercises. You have 2G technologies (e.g. GSM/GPRS), 3G (1xRTT, EVDO, HSDPA etc etc), and at some point we will move to 4G. I suspect you are inferring that 1xRTT is too slow to be considered 3G, or fast mobile data. And many people try to lump it in much slower technologies from a previous generation, simply because it had the misfortune of being around at the same time.

I was talking to a dealer yesterday who was waiting on the 700w that day, then a colleague of his in the same store told me today that they were still expecting it mid-November.

It actually is the Treo 700wx, which has double the memory of the Treo 700w.
