Jezza: She got into the router settings but it doesn't give you the option to pick the same 'Encapsulation' value that BigPipe require

Is this any help?

http://www.netguardian.co.nz/content/netguardian/4/124/9720.htm

(But use the bigpipe settings instead of the ones there)

Hey, thanks for the link but that's actually the one I used. The 'Encapsulation' settings just don't come up.

Do you mean the box isn't there at all?, or the value you need to enter isn't among the options?

The values. Can get into the router settings perfectly fine, enter VPI/VCI values as requested. Encapsulation is asked to choose; PPPoA, PPPoATM, or RFC 2364. It's not an option. No idea what 'Multiplexing' (another input requirement) it's nowhere an option to chose in the router settings either.

I must say, it's been MANY years since I've been asked to manual enter this crap into router settings.

I'll keep trying and reading but most likely end up giving Orcon a call if we can't get sorted by tomorrow. At least they allow you the luxury of ignorance or not having to deal with something so .....' wtf is this':p

Hi,

If you PM me the email address you used to sign up with I can follow up with our support team.

I'm sorry you are having trouble. The vast majority of modems work without requiring any settings, but some older ones, like the Dynalink one you have which is about 6 years old, might need fiddling about with a bit.

I'm not familiar with that model, but I've had a read on the settings for it, and looks like one of the options for Encapsulaltion is VCMUX,  which is the setting we say for multiplexing.
Try choosing that setting in the encapsulation box.

I notice you have just moved to NZ so I wonder also whether you brought that modem with you from overseas and possibly it is locked to whichever ISP you were with there?

As a final step, are you able to try a different modem just to make sure the line is working fine? e.g. borrow it from a neighbour?  Sometimes modems just break, especially old ones.

All the settings they require use the default values anyway. So if yours isn't working it's hardly their fault, I'm using the same modem and didn't have to touch a thing.

Why does the Bigpipe website require JavaScript?

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Well, after a little bit of schedule fluffing around, got connected this morning. Couldn't have been smoother, was expecting to have some issues configuring the modem (an Asus DSL-N66U) but it worked perfectly.

Am a happy chappie on 35 down and 10 up.

Yeah, for Bigpipe!!

Spoonguard: Why does the Bigpipe website require JavaScript?

Because it's a nice responsive web design which scales according to window size. HTML5 isn't widespread enough to do it that way so they've opted for JavaScript responsive. IMO the page is a bit resource weighty but its not too bad 2MB isn't exactly big these days.

Try resizing your window smaller and you will hopefully see what I mean.

Is it causing a problem viewing it?

This.
We wanted to make it as mobile friendly as possible (especially for the support ticket page!).

After being connected for almost 3 weeks I must say I am very impressed with the speed, the stability of this speed and the support I've received for the few times I have reached out. Honestly, if you manage to get a bigger IP allocation and allow people to 'switch on' a public IP or switch it off as they please (put in a blurb how in some cases CG-Nat is a bit better for security or something) then you'll have a winner of an ISP.

Keep it up guys!

I must be the last JSrefusenik in the country. http://www.bigpipe.co.nz/views/no-javascript.html has no information about your product or service and leads nowhere. And the support ticket page isn't friendly to my mobile (mind you, it technically doesn't have a web browser anyway.) I am not accessibility challenged, so I can't say if this is a accessibility issue.

What do I think of Bigpipe? If I am to inform my opinion on these things alone, I would have to say it's too #trendy for me. Has it become unreasonable for websites to have a static fallback?

Yeah, modern browsers run all sorts of JS execution optimisations while sandboxing scripts so the security risk is a lot more diminished and the speed is far more responsive. Also standards are more developed and browsers are are a lot more error-tolerant than the 'old days'.

Not much reason for no JavaScript IMO unless you're a web dev (paradoxically) testing sites for people without JavaScript.

If you don't have a modern browser then JavaScript is the least of your security concerns.

Thanks Michael,

Yes we will be making the CGNat part clearer very shortly (monday hopefully),  and making the public IP option easier to get soonish too.
