I have Telecom NZ 14.0.  Can I upgrade this without installing iOS 7?

If the update didn't appear when you went to settings -> general -> about, then No, you will need to udpate to IOS7 first.

My comments and remarks are not necessarily of my employer.

w2krules: No 4G yet on my iPhone 5.  Do I need to upgrade to iOS 7 to get 4G, or is it just that it hasn't been enabled yet where I am (Royal Oak)?

Yes - you also need to also have Carrier - Telecom NZ 15.6 on your iPhone5 for LTE Cellular data to be available [settings -> general -> about].

Plug it into your PC with itunes on it and the carrier file might update on the handset

Thanks, but I'm updating to iOS 7.  I will have to do it eventually...

eXDee: Looking forward to this taking the load off the 3G network. I'd like to request everyone buy 4G phones and 4G be rolled out everywhere, thanks :D

Then the LTE network will be as slow as the 3G network..

how did you come to this conclusion?

It's a shared resource.  The more you use the less there is for everyone else..

Correct but 4G is way more efficient with this resource over 3G

Paulthagerous: May only get 1 bar at home but at my secret testing spot it is going quite well. Only wish I had a Cat4 device to test instead of the Cat3 S4 Mini lol.

Surely this is an incorrect result?! One bar of 4G and you've technically exceeded the download capability of a Cat 3 device!

4G signal is weaker than 3G (only 2/5 dots) but still almost 25 Mbps.  But most impressive is the ping at 24 ms, which is shorter than our broadband.  Looks like a data upgrade will be needed.

Sorry, guess I should have been clearer.

1 bar is at home.  Results are 25-35 mb/s down and 10-15 mb/s up

At the spot I got this result I would have been 100-150 metres away from the cell tower.

The screenshot was taken at home, but is of a test at the 2nd site.

As to technically breaking the speed barrier, I wonder if it is a slight inaccuracy of the speedtest app or if, unlike other technologies I can think of, the max speed is a little conservative and can actually be attained....

The Cat3 standard actually provides for 102Mbps downlink and 51Mbps uplink, rather than the more rounded numbers of 100/50 often given.

All 4G devices get 4G as long as you have a 4G sim.

jeffnz: anyone on custom roms getting the 4G. I have it selected by still nothing, not a biggie but interested in keeping up with the Jones's

Running the latest Cyanogen Mod on my Xperia Z C6603, it wouldn't connect to any 4G until about an hour of me being in a coverage zone, and after multiple reboots. I also thought it may be something to do with the custom rom but glad it works now. I did change it to LTE/WCDMA in preferred mode, but it seems to reset to LTE/WCDMA/GSM every time I reboot, not sure if thats a bug or feature but look for that option.
