On Wednesday I received a text message advising that the modem would be delivered the following day. The courier driver must not get the same notification because the modem arrived just after 1pm on Wednesday. So disappointed it arrived earlier than expected ;-)

Do you want some compensation for getting the modem delivery date wrong? ;)

Of course! A free Galaxy S4 should do for starters. And a year's free unlimited calls, texts and mobile data for it. And I want my house washed monthly and the yard cleared. Okay with you? ;-)

I asked earlier but didn't get a response. It is easy to set the DNS addresses in the Thompson modem without having to resort to CLI?

And how hard is it to use in bridge mode (if that is the term) so it's only used as a modem and you use a different router/WAP?

Thanks

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

It has a bridging built into the GUI, unsure on the DNS front

My modem arrived this morning, and I have been using it for a couple of hours now.  I have setup my DHCP range and set the IP address of the modem to the correct range, however I cannot see any way to change to DNS via the web interface.  Guess your stuck with SSH.

(FYI - It doesn't bother me as I set my unblock-us DNS addresses on my Untangle server, then point all clients to that. Works great!)

Just set up bridging in that case, I'd recommend using Selective DNS (I don't think Untangle does this) but if you're running a router box in the way then use Bind9 and use the Telecom DNS for everything except the domains you need UnblockUS for so you've got full YouTube speed etc.

worst case is that yo change the DNS on each device rather than the modem.

That's what I do with my current setup. It means I can have my smart TV set to NZ, to get tvnz ondemand, and ps3 set to unblock us, to get all the other stuff.

so, as someone who still has their new vdsl modem unopened, are they easy to set up on adsl to test? And then is it just a case of resetting when vdsl is connected? (i know the tg582 was insanely easy to set up)

Just connected mine on adsl. No dramas at all, just worked. Longest bit was changing the wireless SSID/password, and updating my wireless devices.

I'd imagine that there is very little to do when the install happens.

I would do that but the Roku has no way of setting the DNS address. If you want to use Unblock you need to change DNS addresses in the router.

My router arrived today so I will try to get bridge mode working so I can use my TP Link instead

JonoNZ in his post on July 8 in this thread made this comment on bridging:

"The TG589vn is ADSL and VDSL but it can't run ADSL in bridged mode, so you will need to bridge it once your VDSL is up.

That is me, yes.

The main issue is that you need a PPPoA PPPoE relay for ADSL and the TG589vn can't do that (the Draytek Vigor 120 can though). If you want to run it with your existing router with ADSL while you wait for VDSL to be activated you can just plug it into your router. You'll end up with double NAT but most services will probably work ok until you can bridge it when your VDSL is activated.

Yeah, I've always wondered about that.  I know Untangle can handle it, and I see a lot of people with Drakteks running in 1/2 bridge mode, is that what you mean? I is that the same thing?

Un-block is fantastic.  Except for the YouTube performance ;-)

I will read you on how to get Untangle setup correctly.  Thanks again michaelmurfy!
