Just got my modem delivered today. I have just set it up on an ADSL2+ connection and it running OK.

Just a reminder: if you have not read the manual yet, the modem comes with two cables. One is a cat5 cable, another one is a phone cable. Don't throw that phone cable away!! That phone cable has RJ11 on one end and RJ45 on the other.

It is because Chorus will install a RJ45 jack for the modem-only port, but the modem is on RJ11. Hence the "funny" phone cable.

Remember, don't throw that phone cable away. =-)

Chorus always install a BT jack.

Ah... this is what I got from the manual.

Can someone from Telecom explains what is going to happen for the VDSL2 installation?

Ordered my VDSL connection online on Monday 8 Jul (evening), chose "less than 5 days" option and received TXT confirmation (no email) two days later on Wed 10 July to say that the installation will take place next Wednesday 17 July. So not quite "less than 5 days" but I'm not complaining. My modem arrived by Courierpost yesterday.

I live in Sandringham (near Eden Park) and the roadside cabinet is probably less than 40-50 metres from my front door.

Modem (Linksys WAG160N) presently reports following stats:

DSL Mode: ADSL2+
DSL Upstream Rate: 765 Kbps
DSL Downstream Rate: 15717 Kbps
DSL Noise Margin: 12.2 dB (Down) 12.4 dB (Up)
DSL Attenuation: 11.0 dB (Down) 5.5 dB (Up)
DSL Transmit Power: 18.5 dBm (Down) 12.6 dBm (Up)

Speedtest results tonight are as follows:
Auckland Server 16ms/13.3Mbps Down/0.63Mbps Up
US Server 173ms/5.5Mbps Down/0.53Mbps Up

I use UnblockUS/UnoDNS (DNS configured on the router) and can stream 720p content from Netflix and Hulu Plus with ease and with a few minutes of buffering can stream 1080p content from Netflix etc as well.

Will report back with updated numbers and my experience of the install when complete. Thanks to posts here I've just come to understand what the attenuation numbers above mean and based on that I'm looking forward to a good result!

Ahh it seems that some Chorus techs have started installing RJ45 wall sockets in the last couple of weeks when installing master filters so people can't get confused as to what one is for the modem.

intresting, started using the Technicolor modem, my attenuation went up from 4.8 to 7.8, must be because its using the broadcom chip, is the thompson using the same?? as that what i was using before.

Hmmm...if I have to take the Telecom-supplied modem it means setting up all my wireless security and home network stuff again, which puts me off a bit. Can I import a config, or does the supplied modem need setup entirely from scratch?

Needs to be setup from defaults I'm afraid... You can use the same settings on the router though in terms of SSID and WPA2 key so that you won't have the change your clients. If you have done extra like specific firewall policies, or MAC address whitelists etc then yes, youhave to do those again.

Or as several others here are doing, perhaps you can bridge from the Thomson to your current router?

OK I must be missing something here so some advice would be helpful.

I am trying to run my modem in bridge mode but have some areas that are not clear to me.

Firstly presumably if I use bridge mode, then my router has to logon to DSL. I am using a TP Link WR1043ND wireless router flashed with Gargoyle firmware.

In the Internet connection screen my options for the connection are Static IP (which I used for TCL cable service) and PPPOA. Presumably I use PPPOA. Bu then  I am required to enter a logon/password. The logon I guess is user@xtrabb.co.nz but I have no idea what the password is. It's asterisked out in all the Technicolor modem settings.

Finally assuming my TP Link is on 192.168.1.250 and the Technicolor is on 192.158.1.254, do I need to tell the TP Link the IP address of the Technicolor?  I certainly can't find that setting in the Gargoyle firmware.

Probably very simple answers to these questions but some assistance would be appreciated.

As an aside I initially tried to update the DNS server addresses in this modem via telnet, as I was able to do with the TG582 (user admin, password blank). But the TG589 does not accept those credentials. Has Telecom put in some new ones to stop us to alter the settings?

Thanks

Is your VDSL live? Typically you connect your Technicolor modem to the routers WAN port when bridging. Your ISP credentials are entered in the router. There is typically nothing else to do other than run the wizard on the Technicolor and select bridge mode.

You will probably have problems if you try and bridge the TG589vn when it is on ADSL. ADSL is PPPoA, VDSL is PPPoE.

I honestly don't know what you're on about here, if you set this new router up with the SAME wireless settings (network name, password) your devices will connect to it again without having to set them up. Most people shouldn't be using mac address filtering, if you have a strong password there's no need for this. It's a 2min job to set the security settings on the router.

I was successfully able to update the DNS servers on the Technicolor TG589vn V2 via Telnet using Username: Administrator and Password:

Telnet command lines issues as below, where primary DNS is UnoTelly (UnoDNS) and secondary is Telecom.

dns server config state=disabled
dhcp server config state=disabled
dhcp server lease flush
dhcp server pool config name=LAN_private primdns=103.6.212.24 secdns=122.56.237.1
dhcp server config state=enabled
dns client flush
dns client dnsadd addr=103.6.212.24
saveall
exit

Tried to edit my post (above) a couple of times, but with no success? I wanted to clarify that no default password was set on my Telecom supplied TG589vn V2. i.e When you telnet to this try using username Administrator and leave the password field empty. Worked for me.
