The TG582n actually has really versatile DNS forwarding options. e.g you can specify certain DNS servers for certain domains or certain DNS servers for a specific client IP. I'm guessing it's the same for the TG589vn. I've got the 800+ page CLI guide if any one wants it.

After ummming and arrhhhing i finally switch over, pretty much i needed a master filter fitted and going from 30 - 80 gig was the winner for me.

Could someone compose a pros and cons list of VDSL?

Rocckr: I was successfully able to update the DNS servers on the Technicolor TG589vn V2 via Telnet using Username: Administrator and Password:

Telnet command lines issues as below, where primary DNS is UnoTelly (UnoDNS) and secondary is Telecom.

dns server config state=disabled
dhcp server config state=disabled
dhcp server lease flush
dhcp server pool config name=LAN_private primdns=103.6.212.24 secdns=122.56.237.1
dhcp server config state=enabled
dns client flush
dns client dnsadd addr=103.6.212.24
saveall
exit

Thanks that was useful as I was able to change my DNS addresses to Unblock-US and Telecom.

I tried all combinations of logons and passwords but just didn't guess them right!

Pro: Faster
Con: Costs more. (Including getting your house wiring/wifi/etc up to scratch and installing a VDSL master splitter, etc)

JonoNZ:
....

Finally assuming my TP Link is on 192.168.1.250 and the Technicolor is on 192.158.1.254, do I need to tell the TP Link the IP address of the Technicolor?  I certainly can't find that setting in the Gargoyle firmware.

Probably very simple answers to these questions but some assistance would be appreciated.

Is your VDSL live? Typically you connect your Technicolor modem to the routers WAN port when bridging. Your ISP credentials are entered in the router. There is typically nothing else to do other than run the wizard on the Technicolor and select bridge mode.

You will probably have problems if you try and bridge the TG589vn when it is on ADSL. ADSL is PPPoA, VDSL is PPPoE.

VDSL is not live yet - next Friday if the phone conversation I had is correct. I was just preparing in advance.

I did run the Wizard but didn't save anything. But if I need to put in my ISP credentials in the router, then I have no idea what they are. Would they have been provided to me at the time of signing up?

All I can see from the modem is user@xtrabb.co.nz and I doubt that is the right credential.

Pros:

Up to 10X faster upload speed
Generally between 2 and 3 times download speed
None of the major headaches of installing UFB - just another (dedicated) jack point added to your existing phone line.

Cons:

The DLM tuning of your line can send your latency up and down especially over the first couple of weeks, initially you can have 16ms added so beware for gaming
Poor quality wiring can mean worse speeds than ADSL - (even with master filter poor quality copper from the exchange to you can affect your attenuation/speed)
You need to be within about 1k from the exchange/cabinet
Slightly more expensive per month than ADSL
There is an installation fee - you need a master filter/dedicated jack point this is a good thing for ADSL too.

While there is a big cons list the reality is for most people the increase in speed will more than outweigh these.

Also the cons list is only cons for some people - if you're close to the exchange/cabinet then all is good but it's been interesting to see people with 20db attenuation plus getting upset they can't get VDSL - the specs are there for good reason in my opinion.

The "user@xtrabb.co.nz" is the right one for both ADSL and VDSL if you have not request static IP.  More info here:

Just set mine up yesterday on ADSL2+, working quite well.

When you say it increases latency over a period of a couple of weeks is that just temporary or would my latency increase permanently?

DLM monitors your line and insures you (should) have the best connection for your particular line stats.

There have been many good discussions over the past couple of years on here about VDSL2 and how DLM works, but this 124 page (and growing) thread will tell you everything http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=90&topicid=105744

AppleJackXD: I just ordered vdsl2 today :D my technician comes on 21/7/2013 im so excited i can download faster and upload my youtube vids really fast and have a better experience playing my bf3 online :D i can feel the power all ready and they haven't even installed it yet :D Im really excited because my adsl2 only goes at 2.50 mb and my upload speed is an awful 0.8 kb

If you're only getting 2.5Mbps now there are two scenarios

a) You're not in a VDSL2 zone and won't get VDSL2 (even though a prequal has presumably shown you can)

b) You are in a  VDSL2 zone but your internal premises wiring is completely and utterly borked - in which case you've only got yourself to blame for your current slow speeds as you could have been getting 5x faster speeds simply by fixing your wiring.

Scenario B is correct ,the cabinet is at the end of my street. The wiring in my house is completly shot and is being fixed a week before my vdsl2 connection is installed. Im just a border at my house it's not up to me to fix the phone wiring ,My dad made me use dial up until 2008 lol he is so hard up ,you think he was gonna get the phone wiring fixed if i asked him ? I don't think so lol.... It took telecom telling him it had to be done to convince him to get it fixed.

I don't appreciate you trying to burst my little bubble of excitement that i have for my new vdsl that im getting. Please do not make fun of my house wiring again. We don't have all the money in the world unlike a lot of you others on this forum hence why phone wiring to make the internet faster was my fathers lowest priority. In my house we have this little thing called bills and we need to pay them.

It was nothing like a dig at you.... It was a serious and likely accurate assessment. It's all well and good to order VDSL but unless your home wiring is up to scratch you won't get good results.

Cheers - N

The vdsl installation from telecom includes a master filter, which should bypass any crummy internal wiring you currently have.

I honestly don't know what you're on about here, if you set this new router up with the SAME wireless settings (network name, password) your devices will connect to it again without having to set them up. Most people shouldn't be using mac address filtering, if you have a strong password there's no need for this. It's a 2min job to set the security settings on the router.

I'm trying to avoid having to redo the entire setup again. If I was to get another Netcomm router I can just import the config file from my current one. That's what I was trying to find out. But it looks like it's not possible with the Telecom-supplied modem. That's all :)

It's worth it in the end :) just do it. Else if you wish you could always turn off DHCP on your current router and turn WiFi off on the Telecom router / use your old router still?
