Sorry, what do you mean "it has to be unlocked in an update"?  I have checked for updates several times, and there is nothing available.  The phone is not locked, and was bought from Telecom NZ (Newmarket store).

As the firmware stands the 4G functionality is not enabled.  Until there is a software update enabling it you cannot use 4G on that device.

I see.  Don't suppose you know what the official Telecom word is on this.  Despite 3 phone calls to Telecom (one to Blackberry support) and 2 visits to stores, no-one knows why it isn't working, why the website shows it is working, or when it will be fixed.

The HTC One and the Blackberry Z10 devices are both 4G capable phones however as of yesterday we are still waiting on the vendor's to approve the FOTA (software) update to be 4G ready for customers to use on our 4G Network.

nunasdream: I'd be returning the Blackberry and swapping it for something else. If they were being sold as being 4G capable and aren't then that seems rather misleading. Least with the HTC One you can reasonably easily turn it on and a fix is going to come.

Yeah, this is my current thinking. I specifically chose a phone that was advertised as 4g and if it cannot be updated to 4g then I will be seeking to return it and get something that works as advertised. And this is ignoring the 10.2 upgrade which has been out over a month and still not made an a appearance in NZ.

Have people been receiving their new SIMs yet other than going into a store and standing in line?

Despite pre-registering for 4G sometime near the start of the year, and again about a month ago, I've still yet to hear anything directly from Telecom (be it via post, email, SMS or other) that 4G is actually now available. Good thing there's Twitter and GZ I guess.

I had the exact same issue, the Pre-register your interest just seemed to go into a black hole and nothing else happens, http://store.telecom.co.nz/mobile/4g seems to be the correct place to get a 4g sim online, did this had an order confirmation within a day and received within 4 days, this was after I have pre-registered twice expecting something would happen close to launch

Hi guys

I have emailed the Roaming department regarding this but have yet to hear back. Thought I'd try here instead.

I will be heading to Malaysia and Japan in the next coming weeks and was wondering if my Galaxy S4 will be 4G compatible in these countries (both countries have 4G coverage).

I am on Telecom's Pay Monthly and will be paying Zone 2 roaming prices of $10 per day for Japan and Zone 3 pricing of $2.50 per MB in Malaysia.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks
Chris

4G Roaming is in planning, but will not be in time for your trip. As for compatibility with the 4G Networks in those countries your should happily work in the local operators 4G networks [B1/B3/B7 from what I can tell seem to the most popular].

3G roaming however will probably be just as fine with HSPA/HSPA-DC coverage.

Hi all - I've been swotting up on this thread and can't see an answer to my question, so thought I'd put it out there to you early adopters (my 4G SIM just arrived today - thanks TC). I have an iPhone 5 running iOS 6.1 and TC Carrier 14 - will I need to update to iOS 7 or can I stay on 6.1 and still receive a carrier update? Will this only happen when I insert the SIM card and connect to iTunes?
Many thanks.

Cheers,
Mike

I am not aware of anyone that has been able to update their carrier settings to "Telecom NZ 15.6", without upgrading to iOS7. The usual method to get the update is to go to Settings -> General -> About, and the notification appears (if your on iOS7). See here.

Hi all,

I am going to get a unlocked Z10 from Carphone Warehouse in the UK via Youshop and was wondering if someone could tell me if it will work on Telecom 4G?

Thanks

Paparangi

We haven't had the update enabling 4G approved by Blackberry yet so it will not work with Telecom 4G currently. I believe it was also mentioned earlier in the thread that AUS/NZ Blackberry are a bit short staffed so it may be a while.

4G seems to be patchy in Wellington, walking along Jervois Quay I get 4G reception round TSB but nothing in my workplace (Datacom). Get patches of 4G between Datacom and Michael Fowler, but 3G at Nikau, which is in between Michael Fowler and Datacom

Standing at Museum Hotel I got 47 down 9 up with 3 bars on 4G, but 3G at Reading

Otherwise not bad, can't run too many speedtests given the amount it consumes.

Following on from my investigations into getting 4G on my Z10, I got fed up of waiting for an official comment and upgraded to 10.2.1 (via a leak on Crackberry forums) and now I have 4G!  And it works!

I don't hold much hope of getting any of this officially in NZ, especially with the news of staff leaving.

perhaps they might go about hiring more people if everyone started returning their phones because they dont operate as advertised?

Telecom have turned on more 4G coverage in Christchurch. Now get 4G at home (Wigram Skies, Hornby)
