thanks to BigPipe and this forum (Michael Murphy especially), I quickly got up and running on an Edge Router 6p with ipv6, but I've quickly come to some headaches.

 

I'm currently region hopping to access some offshore services like BBC/ITV etc via Unotelly.

 

It seems like IPv6 is in conflict with those types of services.

 

I'm currently using Ubiquity DNS Masquerading to push the resolution of specific DNS entries relating to the offshore brands I'm interested in to unotelly, while leaving all others untouched - this works great with IPv4, but I'm hitting issues in IPv6.

 

What is the best way of handling this in an IPv6 environment?

 

i.e. if I can push all clients to use the routers DNS server and then force resolution via ipv4 to the DNSMasq brands only (and subsequently to unotelly) - and forward all other requests onto BigPipes ipv6/ipv4 resolver - is this doable?

 

Has anyone got an edge router config running ipv6 that they could share for doing this sort of stuff?

Bearing in mind that I've never used a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter:

 

I use a Unotelly equivalent. The problem you're experiencing will be that your clients are prioritising IPv6 DNS servers, bypassing Unotelly.

 

Give up on the idea of having split DNS based on particular domains or hostnames - it'll drive you up the wall! The BBC, for example, uses various domains and CDNs, and in extreme cases they can change from hour to hour, so it's more involved than forwarding DNS queries for bbc.co.uk to Unotelly, for example - and keeping track of this stuff is essentially what you pay Unotelly for. It may pay to check the privacy policy of Unotelly - the last time I checked they didn't guarantee not to log your DNS queries, which is something that Getflix and other services do guarantee.

 

Here's the solution I use on my own network, which is partially influenced by other requirements I have:

 

  • I host a caching DNS server on my network (actually two in my case, each available through both IPv4 and IPv6), which forwards all queries to the unblocking service
  • I've assigned an IPv6 ULA, which my router advertises with the O bit set, and I use stateless DHCPv6 to specify my local DNS servers - note that Windows still causes a fuss with RDNSS 
  • I have my router set to not advertise DNS servers coming through from BigPipe's prefix

(Unfortunately I don't have a lot of time this morning! I've bashed this response out in a hurry, but I hope it answers your question.)
