l43a2: im on the west coast south island, and i dont have the time to waste trying to explain my problem to the level 1 idiots at telecom. Im on a VPN atm just to get any ounce of international speed.

Your getting better speeds with a VPN? I was using Astril last night and got no improvement in speed.

I sent them a twitter linking to this post but didn't get a reply - Dunedin.

And here is my tracert result:

I have my own router and am using the Telecom supplied Technicolor router as a modem, so I expect the third hop will have the same IP address as the "Default Gateway" as reported by the Technicolor modem/router.

However, I found that they are not the same. In fact, the default gateway's IP cannot be found in the tracert result!

Any ideas?

If I understand it correctly that's the pool my IP address is assigned to. i.e. a dialup pool

Intermittent??
Firstly I see speeds test to LA slow
Then I see VPN connections having good speeds
Is this consistent everytime or it's intermittent?

YouTube slow?? Akamai caching is in country... Hmm
International web sites slow?? Telecom caching handles this type of traffic ... Hmm

Surmise:
slow international speeds +
Good speeds when using VPN +
Maybe some issues with caches =

It doesn't add up!! Doesn't make sense.%%

Definitely getting intermittent issue with international speeds as well
Was fine about an hour ago but playing up again

I called the help desk and spoke to Complex Internet who advised to ignore the high latency on the 3rd hop as it does not prioritize icmp

Will need to send an email to adsl_helpdesk@telecom.co.nz with trace routes and speed tests for them to look into it
