Wade: I have flashed stock rom (non carrier branded) onto my VFNZ S3, just received OTA update this evening, update released 6th August (UK time) and i now have it two days later so gotta be pretty happy with that

My back stop position is that if I need a VFNZ specific rom due to software issues i will re-install at such time so no real risk

I struggled initially to see what your post had to do with Android updates on XT branded phones, but I guess what you are saying is load an unbranded rom and you will get the latest update.....

Edit: added 'branded phones'

Yes...

I am still running a stock Samsung Rom not even rooted but have effectively bypassed the carrier customization so I get ota updates within days of Samsung releasing them

Telecom are telling us these checks and amendments are required and maybe they are but enough people are using phones from one carrier on the others network without issue which would suggest that generally this is not a major problem if at all so customization is more of a moot point.

This is a key area where HTC have let the android community down. If only it was as simple as being able to load a new RUU. But HTC owners have to go the HTCDev route AFAIK. I must say Samsung are streets ahead in this respect.

Edit: fixed typo
