wongtop: It seems that the only plans now on the telecom site are "Smartphone" plans and this may be causing some confusion. I recommended to someone of the older generation that they switch to one of the new "open smartphone" plans as this is a better deal than the older plan that they are on. Their response was, "But I don't have a smartphone".

Now it's time to convince them to upgrade to a smartphone

Just to disappoint everyone further, I have just added the $20 'extra' 1gb of data, as worded on the telecom website and as would be logical as it states it is available for the $159 smartphone plan which already comes with 3gb of data and here is what it says when you actually try to add this to your account...

$20 Data BoostYou'll get a total of 1GB (1024MB) of data each month.
Additional data costs 20c per MB.

which means to me I will end up with 1gb of data not the 1.25 gb I was expecting (I currently have 250mb data included in my plan).

confusing, yes! I only signed up to the plan in the first place because of the wording on the website leading me to believe I could end up with 1.25gb + 150 mins and unlimited txts for $49 (my base plan open smartphone $29 + $20 data add on).

It says it may take up to 5 days to load this onto my account so I will confirm then when I am able to check the data amount online whether I get 1 or 1.25gb but I won't be holding my breath for the larger amount.

I believe it'll be a separate extra/addon. You'll see a separate usage meter for it in Your Telecom, it won't replace the existing one.

Because locked gives you $250odd handset subsidy, the open plan does not?

In my experience Telcom would give you a $10 per month (or thereabouts) discount if you opt not to get a handset subsidy

- 300 Minutes
- 300 Texts
- 2GB Data

- 500 Minutes
- 600 Texts
- 1.5 GB data

Now this is frustrating as what I really want is more data, I'm not that interested in more minutes.

Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat APAC as a Technology Evangelist and Portfolio Architect. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.

I'm half way through a 24 month contract and they "recommend" i switch to a more expensive plan for the remaining 12 months.

I'd happily take a cheaper plan with some flexibility around mobile data. Most months I use 2G but I've occasionally needed more due to work trips and site visits etc.

My account has updated and I am astounded to see I am actually getting my original 250mb + the additional 1GB. Even my email this morning from Telecom updating me on the progress of my new add on didn't clarify this having the following summary which once again made it look like I would only have the data boost amount and not the original included also...

So up until now when the online usage meter has been updated I still thought I would only have the 1gb. I am pleasantly surprised, not often you feel like you have come out on the winning end!

Interestingly I had a call from Telecom last week from some person with a heavy accent that i assumed English wasn't their first language. He stated that my contract was nearly up and did I want to go to new plan and had i heard of the new ones, which I had from GZ. The new plan was a $1 less than current and had more minutes.
Anyway I told him I was aware of it and would be changing it shortly, which he kindly said he could, so far so good but then he started telling me of the new plan which I had told I knew about, it was like he had a script and had dropped a page and wasn't really listening. It took 20 seconds for him to understand I knew about it then he talked about renewing my contract which was strange as I'm open term, told him then confused mutterings then he proceeds to say i could get a new phone. I told him I had a Galaxy S3 to which he said I could have a free Lumino 900 (whole other argument). I said that was great that they could offer me a free phone on open term, ummm no I had to go to 2 year contract. Finally I ran out of patience and said if I wanted contract I would have done so etc etc.

I'm sure he was a nice guy but man they try your patience sometimes especially when they didn't have thier details right in first place.
