I see new Smartphone plans have gone live on their site:

http://www.telecom.co.nz/mobile/mobile/plansandpricing/paymonthly/

Interesting how they've got different plans for being locked in (12/24 mths) or on open-term.

2020 MacBook Air M1 (Space Grey) | 2023 Mac mini M2 | 2021 iPad Pro 11" M1 (Space Grey) | 2021 iPad mini (Space Grey) | iPhone 15 Pro Max (Natural Titanium) | HomePod (Space Grey) | 10x HomePod mini (Space Grey, White, Yellow, Blue, Orange) | 4x Apple TV 4K | Apple Watch Ultra 2

Their $39 is almost equivalent to the current $19 prepaid pack which sort of puts me off.

God i am glad i have my current plan, why do companies always lower data put bump up the price

I don't want more minutes I want data, its a smart phone. :P

Currently i spend $110 a month
that gives me
300 minutes
5000 text
2gig of data
Plus free S3 (24 month contract)

For the new one with the same or better i would have to pay (500 minutes, 5000 text, 2gig data)

$89 for plan + $20 for another gig of data + $10 for text
$500 off a phone 24 month contract
Total $119 a month

Otherwise i could drop minutes to (250 minutes + 5000 text + 2gig data)
$59 for plan + $20 for another gig + 10 for text
$250 off a phone 24 month contract
total of $89 a month

However in staying that it does not look like you can buy the extra 1 gig of data on any plan apart from "open smartphone and smartphone $159 plan"
So just happy i have my current plan as it gives me the data i need.

fairly disappointing since you can't buy extra data on most of the plans

It seems you can buy an extra 1GB addon block for $20 on any of the no term plans, but can only buy that 1GB block on the $159 term contract plan.

If you didn't want a contract, you could get the $39 open term plan and add an extra GB of data.

that would give you 250 mins, unlimited txt and 1.5GB for $59.  So pretty close to what you have now for almost half the price per month (saving you $51 per month, which would more than  cover the cost of a top end smartphone over 2 years)

alternatively, if you definitely need 2GB, you could get the $59 open plan and add a 1GB to give you 500 mins, unlimited txts, and 2GB data.
So a better plan than you have now (more mins, more txts, same data)  for only $79 compared to $110 that you currently pay.

Is it just me or are the telcos increasing prices across the board?

Yeah this is very annoying.

I'm currently on a $100 smart phone plan which gives me
 - 300 minutes
 - 300 texts
 - 2GB Data

Like many others its normally data that is the killer. If all the new plans allowed for $20 1GB Data top ups then I could make do on a cheaper plan.

In fact the $39 Open plan would be a good fit as I could buy ad-hoc data when I needed it.

I'd really like to see Telecom offer ad-hoc data add on for all their plans.

Most likely not the only one .  I seem to remember an article in an Australian paper this week saying that they are seeing carrier cost creep over there as well..

Yeah I do wish that more data was offered at lower price points - you can't really call it a 'smartphone' plan if the high data allowances are in the top tier plans!

Having that 1.5GB allowance between the $89 and $139 plan is a bit of a slap in the face too. Realistically 2GB should be coming in at the $89 plan.

You can get 1.5GB for $59 and 2GB for $79

(open plan $39+$20 1GB bolt on  or $59+ 1GB bolt on)

I'm currently on open plan $60 and a quick look would show I'm better off by more texts the rest remains the same.

Obviously contracts with a free or subsidised phones aren't all that good and would seem better off to buy phone outright when interest free is around.

Can't see point in 24 mth plan as you don't get a free phone, the costs don't add up to me.

Assuming you are on an open term:

'Old' Smartphone $60
100 Mins
300 TXT
1GB Data

Open Smartphone $29 +$20 data bolt on
150 Mins
Non stop txt
1.25GB data

= 50 more mins, many more text, 250MB more data for $11 less per month.

So, to have a telecom phone on a contract, it costs you MORE?

they lock you in to charge you more, how does that even work

$59 Smartphone plan
LOCKED into a contract, have to pay to switch plans, end contract
200 minutes
600 text
1GB
$100 of $250 off a phone
Overage: 69cents a minute
International Calling: Australia, UK, USA, CAN, IRE - 91c/min, Rest of World - $1.43/min

$59 Open Smartphone plan
Can change or cancel at anytime
500 minutes
Non-Stop Text (fair usage, but will be 2500/5000ish)
1GB Data
Overage: 59cents a minute
International Calling: Australia, UK, USA, CAN, IRE - 51c/min, Rest of World - $1.43/min
