johnr: Latency and upload need work

I think Telecom limit upload speed. I've never been able to get over 900kbps

I've had 2 Mb/s, which I had heard is Telecom's (artificial?) limit. But that was back when Telecom was fast.

I understood Telecom were deploying cat6 HSUPA, but have never seen a speed test in excess of 2Mbps on Telecom.

With mobile phones being a generator of content upload speeds are becoming very important these days, and I'd argue they're probably as important as good download speeds. It's fairly typical to get 3-3.5Mbps on Vodafone these days virtually everywhere around Wellington.

It was interesting during the Hobbit red carpet doing some totally unscientific tests that the Vodafone network was coping fine with downstream traffic with speeds on a 21Mbps device still delivering a consistant ~11Mbps down in Courtenay Place, but their upstream was being hammered and struggling to maintain 500kbps. It really does show that people aren't just using their devices to consume content, but to generate it.

Personally I don't see why Telecom is spending money on this. I would be using my recourses on the LTE trial and going forward from there..

Cause it increases capacity of the current network

+! using 1800MHZ LTE. Any idea when the government gets off their chuffs and announces a definite data for the 700MHZ spectrum auction.

Here's the sort of typical speed test I see on Telecom in Wellington CBD

Upload speed virtually never goes over 900kbps

WCDMA network capacity is still a big issue going forward. Since LTE doesn't have a (as yet working) voice solution WCDMA fallback is required for voice, so capacity needs to there on the network to support this.

That if no other reason is a good idea to do it... Doubling your network capacity at 850mhz means you can run twice as many handsets at the lower frequencies without needing to bump them up to 2100. And that's good for everyone.

Plus I don't see a huge availability of LTE handsets today, so... John (as is frequently the case) is right. :)
