Thanks runningman thats just the info i was looking for clear and consice.i will probably use the existing wire for the modem.
does it matter which way the pairs get connected i.e blue and white to red and white. is it blue to red and white to white?

I'm actually in the process of writing a blog post explaining why a master filter is mandatory for xDSL performance, hopefully I'll find some time tomorrow to do some more work on this as I started writing it a year ago!

While this is getting slightly OT, I was originally going to incorporate a section that gave a brief rundown on how to hook up a master filter, but canned this as I believe it will cause more harm than good with people attempting to fix faults with absolutely no idea of what they're doing. The reality is phone wiring isn't rocket science if you understand what you're doing, but even I run across cabling that defies belief sometimes and takes a lot of time to understand!

Hi Stone, assuming you put the filter in the ETP then you need to connect the modem port (Green) to another pair in the white cable, ie Bk/Or or Gr/Bl. the voice port of the filter to the existing Wh/Red pair to continue feeding all the existing sockets. You then need to build a modem pair (either from an existing pair in the existing cable or run a new cable) from the ETP to the desired modem location and install a new socket for the modem.

Hi all just an update if anyone's still interested.
Telecom have finally turned interleaving off and my speeds and ping are back to where they were before all this trouble.

I haven't installed the master filter yet or bought a new modem.

Hey plambrechtsen would you be kind enough to run another line test just to see if or what any difference's are. I'd be really interested to know. Thanks

Good to see the issue has been narrowed down to the modem. There would certainly be a lot of people out there with older modems that have major compatability issues with the ISAM linecards so end users aren't receiving the speed they should be.

Hi Steve, I would not put it for certain on the modem, although those older Dlinks I would not be surprised if its part of the problem also.

Recntly I asked for interleaving to be turned off my sync fell from 18Mb/s to 7Mb/s, but the latency dropped as expected. I had several calls to Telecom and they all said it was my modem (TP-Link 8840 broadcom chipset) or my line (600m 7dB att), but I persisted. Eventually I got on to a CSR who was higher up the chain, he immediately noted that for whatever reason when interleave was turned off the system automatically engaged a very conservative profile, he put it back to the normal higher profile and I get my 18Mb/s and low latency, he also said he would not have expected 1st tier CSR's to have either understood or known to check the profile.

well no guys it cant be the modem because im still using my old one 504t.
although i suspect a new modem would give me even better speeds but i dont think it would be hugely better so am going to stay with my dinosaur for now.
im waiting to hear from plamnrechtsen about another line test to see if the only difference is interleaving being switched off.

But in this case it seems pretty a clear cut case the issue is the modem - as the table on the earlier page shows they have issues with interleaving which is exactly what you are seeing. There are plenty of compatability issues with older d-link modems and the newer Ikanos linecards.

The harsh but real world reality is that the whole d-link 504 range are exceptionally terrible modems.

I've heard of a few similar issues, but in this case the results are identical to that of a known firmware issue with these modems, right down to the identical sync rate that occurs when the fault arises.

ahh...yes i understand now.if there was no problem with the modem then i wouldn't see such slow speeds with interleaving on. is that right?

Exactly. The problem you're describing is exactly what is documented on the first page by Telecom.

Most of the earlier 504's don't even work at all on the new Ikanos linecards, there are plenty of threads on here discussing the issues with these modems.

Hello again.
Just thought some of you might be interested in a followup. I have installed a master filter and my speeds have increased by about 3Mbps so was well worth the effort. I wonder how much faster still I might get with a modern modem as I do plan on getting a new one but just not yet.
Anyway here are my new speeds

This is more the average tho as the other one was a fluke I reckon but I couldn't resist posting it as it's the best I've ever had
