Looking at the map on chorus.co.nz, even the 3 year map stops 500m short of Wellington Regional Hospital in Newtown, and Newtown school.

Is there a reason for this?

My first guess would be that they alreadyhave fibre there without UFB

Wellington Hospital already has plenty of fibre. According to the schedule Newtown School gets UFB by June 2013.

As pointed out just because a school isn't in a UFB area doesn't mean it doesn't already have or won't be getting fibre. Hundreds of schools already have fibre from their closet FTTN Whisper Cabinet or exchange, some of it using existing infrastructure.

I've had residential UFB for eight months now, compulsorily bundled with a phone line but one of the bonuses has been the dramatic drop in toll charges. For example, where we previously paid Telecom 27 cent per minute for a cell phone call, we now pay 9.2 cents, and tolls just about anywhere cost 4.5 cents.

But the purpose of my posting is to highlight an issue that those considering signing up for UFB might want to consider. And that is the matter of how many hours is the ISP open for? My ISP is open Mon-Fri 9am-8pm and Sat 9am-3pm. Now if my 'phone or internet fails outside those hours I am up the creek until they re-open. If I had a problem at 4pm on a Saturday there is no support for me until Monday 9am. That said, I've not need support yet.

On the other hand Telecom are open 7 days a week 7am-9pm and if your phone fails they can also divert your landline number to a cellphone whilst the fault is investigated. Smaller ISP's can not offer this.

I'm no great fan of Telecom's monopoly, but for those comparing whatever UFB they offer in a few days time with the other ISP's, you may also want to consider their support desk opening hours too.

If you click on the Business Fibre Area, Wellington Hospital is covered by this.

So Mon-Fri Telecom are open an extra 3 hours a day and they have better coverage over the weekend. Doesn't seem like a major difference?

Depends on which ISP you are talking to. I know of several (ourselves included) that have this capability.

I think it would if your phone failed, as I wrote, at 4pm on a Saturday.

No, but they have a nicely spoken answer machine voice, but that may not satisfy many people.

I would like to see 100/50, 1tb options, no forced spend on landline, realistic additional data blocks able to be purchased and free night times. So basically what snap have but from an ISP I can convince people to use as they have heard of them
