Kirdog: I have noticed that signal strength with vodafone is a -78dBm (9.5 Mbps data speed) and with telecom is -98dBM(1.04 Mbps data speed) at the same phone location, cell towers located at the same position (vodafone and telecom), but signal strength difference is huge.

Something wrong here, is it "green" cell tower with reduced power usage? :D

PM me some details - Location, MSISDN, times, and signal strengths - and I will take a look. It looks like from all your posts your not on the ideal serving cell and may only be connecting to our WCDMA2100Mhz network.

Go into service mode on the S3 and you can tell if you are connecting to 850 or 2100Mhz 3G

Getting complaints from a mate on skinny in other parts of hamilton, and another in tauranga too.
Coincidence? I assume there are no known network wide issues atm?

There are no network wide issues at present. These will be isolated / co-incidental. There has been a lot of planned work however to help with holiday capacity, etc.

850 Mhz, at my location, signal strenth is  -93 dBm 10 asu

Speed is 0.79 Down and 1.53 UP with 71 ms ping. Measured just minute ago. :)

So that proves that handset is attaching to the 850 3G

Pt Chev is not a holiday Hotspot either

I've PM'd the OP some details about the site they are connecting to.

I won't discuss the merits of holidaying in Pt Chev.

Today i've detected capacity issue at Western Springs location during big day out event.

Telecom XT network.

1) There was no possibility to make or receive calls from 17:00 Pm untill 23:00
2) "Emergency calls only" status. (that mean link between cell tower and phone was loss frequently)
3) Mobile internet - connection establishing but speed was 0.00 - 0.00 (nothing).

I have done call to just report that issue with capacity or cell tower, so i called to 120 to report a problem, but it was VERY hard to explain what the problem are. Telecom, train your technicians better please :) !

I have checked vodafone sim card at the same location at the same time:

1) I can do calls.
2) Signal - good/average.
3) Internet speed 0.50 Down - 0.30 Up.

Vodafone network was overloaded as well but it is still possible to make calls and play ingress.

Seems TELECOM cell tower capacity should be increased.

Probably my feed back will be helpfull.

Best wishes.
Kir.

What proposals do you have to change the laws of physics so that it's possible to have 45000 people congregating in such a small area and deliver uninterrupted wireless coverage? Every network engineer in the world who deals with wireless would love to hear your answer.

Covering outdoor events like this is a nightmare and it quite simply has to be accepted that congestion WILL occur unless the laws of physics are changed. It differs significantly to an area such as stadium where it's possible to fully sectorise a venue.

And for the record there isn't a "single tower". Both Vodafone and Telecom have multiple COWs in place at the BDO, and I would assume 2degrees did as well. Unfortunately COWs can't change the laws of physics and the problem goes beyond a capacity issue - it becomes a real world laws of physics limitation once the noise floor kicks in.

Vodafone had 3G and 4G COWs on site but capacity is not unlimited so at big events like this congestion is to be expected,

So, here is marketing/customer acquisition strategy question related to this thread.

If we accept the following 2 points:

  1. That over the holiday period when the cellular networks were already congested, the XT network was completely overloaded in places like Hamilton due to the extra demand caused the the call and data discounts and give aways.
  2. That the 2 degrees network is less vulnerable to overloading as it has greater numbers of RNC's and a superior bandwidth to customer ratio, due to lower customer numbers.

; could it be possible that 2degrees is discounting, knowing that the resulting price matching will cause overloading and dis-satisfied customers on competitors networks, while the 2degrees network continues to perform acceptably, thereby causing customer migration from competitors to the 2degrees network?

This would after all be leveraging their strengths against their competitors Achilles heels?

I am not aware of the timing of each companies discounting/giveaway offers, so that knowledge may debunk my theory.

RNC numbers have nothing to do with this.

Well explain me magic about vodafone, did they changed "the laws of physics"? Or why i have done several calls via Voda + i have captured 2 portals(ingress) at park(that mean i have used data successfully), but i was't receive any TELECOM signal at my home and western springs park, and only spot with average signal was near caltex site, but i was not able to make any call anyway, no data connection at all!

Well I hope it happened because there were more mobile Telecom customers then Vodafone. :)
