kieran21: Interesting stat about the uploads being greater. I guess it really shows how popular torrenting really still is. I can understand torrenting/seeding cracked games (maybe). But in this day and age, those games (getting harder and harder to crack) are probably available on Steam.. and there is Netflix and Hulu and other 'dodgy', but good quality, video streams available. Spotify for music, TVNZondemand for NZ TV shows. I stopped torrenting a while ago in favour of more user-friendly, paid, and less 'virusy' streaming services. Hell yes I can play it all on my PS3, desktop and phone, far better quality and far more simple for the rest of the family. Even when I did torrent 'Linux ISOs', I shared a torrent-box with a mate, made the downloads a hell of a load faster overall, and then used way less bandwidth getting onto my PC so could get away with a way smaller data cap.

I just don't understand what/why so many people are still torrenting with fast net the whole idea is that you can stream easy?

some of us are simply set in our ways, or rather intertwined with the "torrenting sector"?

in saying that, i haven't torrented on my home line in years.

BigPipeNZ: Early this morning (21st Jan) the international upload traffic on bigpipe exceeded the download traffic for the first time. At one point upload bandwidth was more than double download.

There's probably an ISP out there who was subject to a DOS at about the same time ;)

A Bigpipe stat part 2:

On the 7th April we saw the highest ever upload traffic on Bigpipe, by a very significant margin.
Upload traffic normally peaks between 8pm and 10pm but this time it peaked at 5.45pm.

Based on what we beleive about international traffic spend and the economics of most ISPs, Bigpipe customers used more upload international traffic per customer at that peak than most ISPs use in download international traffic at their peak surprised

Lots of people must be enjoying their VDSL high upload speeds utilising cloud backup services and seeding Linux iSOs, right?

In totally unrelated news, Game of Thrones S04E01 was broadcast on HBO earlier that day in the USA.
I was always taught correlation does not equal causation, so it's probably got absolutely nothing to do with that, but thought I would mention it anyway.

such a overhyped show :c

network utilization in a few racks of servers i have my hand in over in the netherlands saw a pretty heavy spike in usage that day.

not to mention seedback times on a certain linux distro which came out that day, where rather higher than a "normal" day. guess it was pre-emptive planning for CVE-2014-0160 eh?

This just makes me really wish I had more than 1mbps up! Sadly too far for VDSL and with UFB not being too far off I guess we'll have to leave Bigpipe :/

How soon is Fibre coming to your area?  We'll be doing some trials soon (next 2-3 months), so will be looking for people to get onto UFB.

I'm looking forward to this months True Net report, it could have Bigpipe in it and I would like to see how you perform.

I emailed them last week and got this reply:

We may be able this month. But we have a problem proving they are on Bigpipe. They look like they are on Telecom

I hope they are on Bigpipe so we can see some results.

If you're looking for UFB trailist, i'm an existing bigpipe customer that happens to also have a dormant UFB connection (Got it as a UFB trailist for TestraClear and then the lack of decent plans made me cancel once i had to pay)

The only thing I've learnt about big pipe customers in this thread, is that they're all bloody seeders

I believe that's something to do with the IP range which we got from Telecom.  We've requested it be re-named to us, but that seems to be taking longer than expected.  I'll follow up and find out why.

(it's the same reason our speedtest.net results show up as Telecom)

that would actually be perfect.  We'll be sending emails out to our customers when we're ready, so keep an eye on your inbox.
