Spotify would be of huge interest to the wife, not so much to me but unfortunately we are on the $39 & $49 plans so both miss out.

Given our monthly spend with Telecom is in the region of $200+ (2x mobiles, VDSL and landline) it is a bit of a kick in the teeth that potentially a $29/mth consumer gets benefits not available to people in our situation

This coupled with the fact i can no longer buy my $20 1gb data extra anymore has me looking for alternatives :(

Would be so cool, just for once, to see people fling a saddle on that gift horse and riding it into battle, rather than looking it in the mouth.

Those looking in the mouth were not gifted the horse though ;)

Not exactly a gift if you aren't eligible for it (despite paying more than those who are), which seems to be people's major complaint.

Maybe it's more a case of petty jealousy then?   You are no worse off than you were before, yet somehow other people getting something this has now caused you to think about moving.  Just seems an  utterly bizarre situaiton

(and you can, of course, move to the $29 prepaid plan if you want to)

I hear what you're saying - but if Spotify was such a dealbreaker/maker for me personally I would probably just move to a plan that can get it, you know? Especially if paying less = getting 'more'.

Petty jealousy? It is a shift in the value proposition which effectively does makes me worse off

I am actually worse off, not because of Spotify but due to the loss of the $20 1gb data extra that has been replaced by a $15 for 500mb extra, but that is another story

A possible solution for me is to buy $29 prepay pack + $29 1.5gb data pack which puts me in a similar position  sans 150 mins a month, not ideal but probably workable

Prepaid has a much lower servicing cost than postpaid. That $29/mth prepaid customer makes the business significantly more through unused credit/self service and through streamlined billing from the launch of siebel on the prepaid network. It also has higher margins than the $39 having half the data and forces people who despise prepaid onto a higher postpaid plan.

1GB for $20 plan i have been told is not financially viable. In order for a data package to be profitable to a telco it has to be positioned and priced to ensure you do not use 100% of the data allocation. In other words you need to pay for more than you use. If everybody who had the 1GB $20 data pack used anymore than 70% as an aggregate the company would not make a cent. Its why roll over data is stupid and why 2degrees havn't and wont make money. Unfortunately no ones in the business to lose money...Just sayin :-/

Anyone know how to use an existing Spotify account with this?

Done this today. They send an email with a link. Click said link.
Enter mobile number. They send a text
Next text code. Then log in to your Spotify account.
If you have premIum, it prompts to cancel your subcription and go back to free account. Then you're done. Super easy. Longest part was waiting for the authentication code via text.

You can get access if you have one of the required ultra plans on a residential/business or corporate account. You cannot get access if you have a custom corporate mobile plan as these tend to have lower margins. The older grandfathered plans also don't include the service.

Bit of schadenfreude going round it has to be said.. don't see those post-paid customers complaining when they are able to purchase flagship smartphones from Day 1 while prepaid customers are made to wait :)

lets not forget post pay customers are usually paying a higher monthly cost than prepay customers as well as committing to a term plan
