Ohakune got Telecom 4G this week, wonder it if will fix the problems that we have on Friday evenings to Sunday mornings when the town is full of ski bunnies and you struggle to get any use out of your phone for calling texting or data.
According to Vodafone's coverage page they don't have any coverage there yet, but Telecom's does not show any either.
The benefit of 2600Mhz is it's (poor) propagation.
Whether we're talking WiFi or mobile technologies, things have changed significantly in the last 10 years as we become hungry for bandwidth. Having single sites with large range isn't necessarily the goal when designing a network - in built up areas it's small cells with short range that provide high capacity in small areas. We're moving into an area where small cells are going to play a key role in network design, and high frequencies are perfect for this.
2.4Ghz WiFi is now pretty much a total piece of junk in built up areas because of the noise, for the very same reasons 60Ghz WiFi is the future because it will only work in the room where you've got the AP which will mean the average home may need 2-3 APs. Those who don't understand RF think this is a downside, anybody who does understand RF thinks it's the most exciting standard every proposed!
When you mean 'built up areas' you're referring to places like the Wellington CBD where Telecom could have lots of small cell sites on top of street lighting rather than having a massive tower to cover the whole area? I assume that they would still have some sort of fall back 700Mhz LTE for coverage? 60Ghz sounds ok when it comes to having an AP in each room but IIRC doesn't the 60ghz signal pretty much is destroyed by a piece of paper in the way?

I noticed that I had 4g on my Lumia 1520 yesterday in Hamilton. Is this just temporary with the field days or is this now live?
4G performance at field days wasn't flash at 20Mb/s but considering the number of people was likely better than I would have got on 3G. I think I was spoilt with my first impression of 4G in Wellington though at 85Mb/s when I first tried it.

Telecom put out a press release saying they had the highest network capacity ever at the Fieldays. I guess people are making use of it.
Are you receiving 4G anywhere else in Hamilton, or just at Mystery Creek?
