No they aren't. They'd rather eat their own livers than give Telecom anymore money but they have invested a large interest in that e-mail address.

Then why on earth would they not even ask Spark if they would keep their email if it is so important.

As a technician do you not advise customers to check these things when they consider shifting ISP's?

I signed up for one when I was on iHug. Later ended up on ClearNet when they purchased Paradise.Net.

My ClearNet email account is still active 18 years later.

Register a domain and control your own email and migrate off ISP supplied email because marketing promises like that are worth nothing.

You don't have any special rights to their domain email address, they could shut it down or end of life clear email addresses any time they want. Consider it's now two owners (Telstraclear, Vodafone) on from when Clear made that "promise".

It's been posted a number of times but Xtra is a Premium Yahoo service including Flickr, the Anti-Virus tools to name just a few. When you cease your billing relationship with Spark with services that qualify for the Xtra account then the Xtra account should get closed.

There are situations where I have seen customers not have their Xtra accounts cut off straight away, but they are the exception rather than the rule. And I would consider it only a matter of time before the account gets cut off.

So if you want to keep the account open, it needs to be attached to an account that has an ongoing billing relationship with Spark paying for a product that qualifies to receive the Xtra account. Since you have closed your account, you will either need to pay for dialup or move the account to some else who is a Spark customer and then they will own the Xtra account, not you.

Ragnor, I never said it was still actively used nor that I actually expected to have access to it for life, or any special right s to it - I'm am not entirely sure where you got that from. All I said was that it had been offered and that mine was still active. Nothing more, or nothing less. I'm sure if I could find the original T's & C's that it would probably say that they could terminate the offer, or change the name, or do any number of things to the service at any time. No arguement there

In reality I moved to GMail as soon as that appeared and these days GMail picks up anything that still comes into to my ClearNet or Paradise.net accounts - which is not much. (It's usually spam or the odd person who keeps using those old addresses despite being given the GMail address)

You do realise that we as techs only get called in when it's gone tits up don't you? People make their decisions BEFORE getting in touch with us then we're left to clean up the pieces.
