Talkiet: Generally speaking where there's smoke, there's fire. Nothing is showing up in the monitoring I have looked at so far, and DNS volumes etc all look normal, but I will bring this thread specifically to the attention of the relevant engineers tomorrow.

Any SPECIFIC reports of replicable issues would be appreciated. (I know it doesn't look like it's an easily replicable issue at the moment but a bunch of "It's a bit funny for me as well" messages add nothing to the investigation)

Cheers - N

There's discussion of the issue on NZNOG now, just in case you haven't seen it already.

Thanks, I have been following it. I'll try to report back later today on progress but my day is chocka full of non operational network things. I'll try.

Cheers - N

Jase2985:

link?

I mentioned it for Neil's benefit, not so much the thread in general.

You'll be able to find it by searching for NZNOG archives, it's a list for New Zealand network operators.  Please DO NOT subscribe to NZNOG to post "ME TOO". :)

I'll be interested to see where this goes as I had to visit a client on Monday who was on spark fibre and complaining about slow page loads etc. ran some speed tests, pings and trace routes - no issues however pages do take an age to load - example was the msn home page.  I didn't change the dns servers but may visit again over the weekend sounds like it might be worth a go.

The appropriate operational team is onto this and have spoken to at least one of the people that have posted to NZnog. I'll provide an update here when I get one. Bear in mind that I (looks at calendar) have no free time today so the update may be this evening.

Cheers - N

Before seeing this thread yesterday I had noticed a degredation in our internet connection over the last week or two.  Pages seem to take longer to load, Netflix take longer to start, and will often drop back in quality while streaming. I'll try changing some DNS servers over the weekend if I get time. Is it best to change them on the PC or does it need to be in the modem/router itself?

(I hope your username is a reference to the greatest SpaceGhost episode ever.)

Anyway, it's better to change it on your Router, that way all your clients benefit.

But to test, just set it manaually on a single device first. Once you're happy, change it on your router and move your test device back to DHCP.

Is there any harm in setting spark dns as primary and Google dns as secondary?

You might get some funky performance that's hard to troubleshoot.  Some CDNs will think you're in NZ, some will think you're wherever the closest Google DNS server is (Sydney I believe, though I haven't checked recently) - They'll base this on which DNS you used for your query.

Apart from that, not really, no.

ive noticed that about 80-85% of my dns queries have been resolved by the primary DNS server. so i dont know if it would achieve that much
