I was able to confirm this by switching between a live stream hosted on YouTube to the same stream on Twitch and the difference was phenomenal. YouTube defaulted to 144p or 360p depending and buffered a lot and twitch was flawless which is something not often heard. My browser had no active extensions running either.

This has been an ongoing issue.

Spark had similar problem...My personal BigPipe connection is having this same issue. I currently have a case open with BigPipe and they are looking into it.

It's been like this for a week now.

Seems like it's getting worse for me. Youtube is hanging every couple of minutes, refreshing the page sometimes fixes it and sometimes not. I've tried multiple browsers, devices, both wired and wifi. Ughh... so frustrating!

Hmm, my connection is doing something similar now. It still defaults to 144p or 240p and now seems unable to load the last 30 seconds of most videos where it simply hangs for up to even a quarter hour at times before continuing playback.

I'm going to guess the lack of feedback from BigPipe for a week now means they know there is an issue but have probably not tracked down the cause yet.

Why do you have a 4ms ping to your own router?

Hey all - so here's where we're at with this issue:

  • There's definitely an issue with YouTube for some Bigpipe customers. Fortunately, it seems to be only affecting a very small proportion of customers. Unfortunately, this doesn't make it any easier for someone who is experiencing trouble, and it makes the problem harder to diagnose and fix.
  • The network team are troubleshooting it and trying to resolve it as quickly as possible.
  • Thanks to everyone who has submitted a support ticket so far. If you are having a problem with YouTube and haven't submitted a ticket yet, please do - and include all the information you can. The info is invaluable for troubleshooting.
  • On that note, please just submit the one ticket. If you've got any changes or updates, please reply to the original email. If we start getting more than one ticket for the same issue, it turns into a massive duplication of effort.
  • We haven't put up a notification or mass email for all our customers for this issue because a.) it's affecting a very small number of people and b.) most YouTube/internet problems in general are still to do with a given user's home networking setup. If we do a mass announcement, we risk flooding the support system with false positives which will make fixing it much harder.

Keep an eye on this thread - we'll be dropping in here frequently to keep an eye on things as well as update you when we have any new information.

Thanks for your patience. We aren't aware of any definitive workarounds at this stage, but there are a few things that have worked for some customers (we haven't been able to replicate them, but it doesn't hurt to try and report back if they do work for you)

- Try using Google's DNS Addresses. (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4)

- Try not using Chrome - other browsers may perform better. One user has reported success with switching to Google Canary (a dev version of Chrome).
