Batman:

i'm on spark, which one is better, DHCP or PPPOE?

most routers can run PPPoE at 1gbps but PPPoE on most routers can only run on a single core of the router

So, when you move past 1gbps aka Hypefibre 2gbps and 4gbps then PPPoE is no longer really viable on a single core

the big advantage of PPPoE is the quick reconnect if there are BNG changes, DHCP the connection is down until the lease renews

So my router is apparently quad core. You mean it's been running at single core all these years!

Unlikely.  Each manufacturer may do things differently.  Some will do task "A" in hardware, others will do it in software.

There is nothing specific about PPP that means that it can only be done on a single CPU core.

No, the PPP thread is single core.

OK I went and made the config change on the Mikrotik RB4011!

Changes made in the order:

  • Disabled PPP interface (PPP --> Interfaces --> selected the red X icon)
  • IP --> DHCP Client --> (defcon already populates a client here, enabled in Searching)
  • Set the Interface on the DHCP Client to that of the VLAN interface created for Spark --> Click Apply and I did click release\renew
  • IP --> Interface List --> WAN --> changed to the VLAN interface created for Spark
  • IP --> Firewall --> NAT. I had to change my NAT rules In interface from the PPPoE to that of the VLAN created for Spark.

The DHCP client status tab will be populated after successful connection (assignment of IP)

Hope that helps.

Working successfully

Much better performance now its not relying on software PPPoE.

Took around 5mins to come online just switched all traffic over to the 5G backup before changing it and no downtime.

"At this point in time this change is only for Spark, but is being progressively rolled out for Skinny and Bigpipe in the coming weeks."

Will you announce once it becomes available for Skinny? I'm hoping that this will help address 'high latency spikes' that keep appearing on my UDM which has only just started happening recently.

I will certainly update this thread when it is available for all Skinny.  At this stage it is available for some Skinny (South Island / Chorus), but not all.   The rollout will be progressive, and we really want to make sure it works as it should.

I ran into an issue with one connection, after switching to DHCP it wouldn't reconnect.
Left it for over 12 hours and rebooted the ONT and router but no difference.
Had to switch back to PPPoE and it reconnected immediately.

I did a couple of others with the exact same router (Unifi Dream Machine) and they reconnected fine on DHCP within a few minutes.
All NorthPower Fibre connections.

@cbrpilot is that something you want to investigate or not worried about it?

I am definitely interested in that.  Can you please send me details?

Thanks

I have also been experiencing high latency spikes and random ISP disconnects with my Unifi UXG-Max, so took the plunge and switched over to DHCP connection tonight - reconnected after 4 min, and seems fine! Hopefully will solve the disconnects I was experiencing over PPPoE.

Switched mine (running a set of Deco x55's).  Took a good 10 mins to switch but once it did its working perfectly.  If anything it appears to be running better and has slightly higher speed overall.

Switched to DHCP on my getting long in the tooth Edgerouter X. Just used the edgerouter configuration wizard - was very simple, and it picked up the new address almost immediately. Almost no downtime.

Do you have an estimate when this is available on Bigpipe in Christchurch?
