This is the same with OneNZ, their one wallet dollars that they tout are a discount off a phone, is really just a monthly discount to lock you into a contract term. They divide whatever one wallet dollars you have over the term, and apply a monthly discount. They also dont explain this in store when you take advantage of this offer, so I suspect many are unaware they are now locked into a term, and miss out on the handset discount if they change provider early.

OneNZ have also put their pricing up recently across all Fibre and mobile plans.

True to some extent, but a bit different from the worked example discussed above.

The terms and conditions for One Wallet state (emphasis is mine):

8. Your redeemed Phone Dollars balance will be spread evenly over the agreed Interest Free term as a One Wallet discount. The One Wallet discount will be applied from your first monthly bill. If you cancel, transfer or trade down your eligible One NZ Pay Monthly plan in the middle of your billing month, you will not receive the discount for that month, and you will be ineligible for any remaining One Wallet discount from that point onwards.

My interpretation of the above is that early termination results in the customer sacrificing the discount that would have been applied across future billing cycles, but they can still bank any discounts applied up to the point of termination.

I would agree with that interpretation and same for Spark. Fortunately our devices are now paid in full so we lose nothing if we shop elsewhere. However we like their range of technology and offers, so will likely just suck up the plan increases and downgrade if necessary.

Again, I’m unsure how else they could execute this. If they gave you a one off credit for a device, especially an Apple device that has minimal margin, what would stop people from just leaving? People whinged about termed plans, hence why we’ve now moved into open-term plans, now they’re whinging about them too.
