I'm amazed that Apple haven't been able to negotiate themselves a slice of the ongoing revenue stream. I mean they would appear to have been in the box seat.

Small country, only a couple of telco's at the moment, both which would be very keen to get the iphone due to it's popularity and they end up with a standard supply agreement?

Either Apple dropped the ball or they must be getting a kickback somewhere.

Paul says a definitive no, but he also said Vodafone were the only or one of the only carriers to sell unlocked iPhones, which was completely false from what he linked to on Apple's on web site, so I take his no with a grain of salt (no offense Paul :)

If we are spreading rumours, the one I heard when the 3G launched was that Vodafone paid a % of the data revenue contract to Apple on signing. e.g. if they had a 2 year $50/month contract then Apple got say 50% of the total value of that contract. I heard it from another Apple reseller and he said thats why you had to buy a data contract with the iPhone. I don't know how true it all was, but it stuck in my head.

At the end of the day I don't believe Apple is that bad a negotiator, but I've been wrong before, and I'll be wrong again...

Erm, the reason Vodafone had exclusivity was technological, not legal - Vodafone was the only telco with a GSM network. Telecom still had CDMA, and the others were small Vodafone resellers that could not afford to import and sell something so expensive.

I must admit i'd heard a claim that Apple were unhappy with the user experience (battery life) when the iphone was connected to 3G-only network.

That would not be a telco problem, but a product design/radio/battery problem...

No news but it is probably a moot point now anyway, especially with apple selling direct.

The last poll on iphoneworld had 63% of users on xt with the balance on vf.

Yeah I wonder how much vf knew of apple's plan and pricing beforehand?

I guess telecom selling the iphone will still benefit those wanting to sign on for a handset discount.

Even if you buy from Apple at full price, you then get a $600 credit from Telecom when you sign up to the "iPhone plan". The handset discount becomes largely moot.

In Australia Three have provided an iSIM on contract or prepay even though they didn't offer the iPhone - this was marketed as a special SIM plan specifically for the iPhone and focussed on data etc. I don't see how this was any different to what telecom did with their offerings, and Three have just started offering the iPhone 3GS having not offered the iPhone at all up until the beginning of July - so it obviously didn't hurt their chances any.

I want to buy one through Telecom as I have some credit with them that I want to use and cant afford to just buy one outright. Hopefully it will happen at some stage.

Actually Zonky, if you look at the facts. MF is exactly right.

If Apple were unhappy of just having 3G on all the time; then thats Apples problem. Not the Providers (in this case Telecom).

Fact is: I have a phone that I can lock to 3G, I can have it sitting on 3G for 2 days. That to me is good.

Are you going to turn around and say "well, Telecom made the right decision with the Nokia E71"?

No. You won't. Because Telecom didn't make it. Nokia did.

So please stop with the whole "reality distortion field" crap, because it's not helpful.
