I see a related post (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=39&topicid=42563) points out the HTC Touch Pro2 is now available from Telecom (http://store.telecom.co.nz/mobile/prepaid/htc-touch-pro2), although unlike the HTC Australian website which announces the new Australian phones the NZ HTC site makes no mention of them, and the Telecom site shows this as WM 6.1.

Woo Hoo It's arrived! I'll nosey it in the shop during the weekend. $1499 as expected also.

What's the source of the "upgrade to 6.5 in Jan" comment? Has TC stated this? - its just that they have a patchy history of providing ROM upgrades (although I must say the upgrade to 6.1 worked flawlessly on my Okta Touch).

Thanks Mike. Hope it comes to pass as outlined. Looking at getting the Touch Pro2 for work in the next couple of weeks and it would be nice to think that 6.5 might be available for it in the near future!

Telecom NZ has a WM story; let's hope someone starts telling it.

In the meantime:

WM6.5 will be available >before< the date in that article.

TNZ Customers will be able to apply the WM6.5 update themselves. For TNZ Customers who return a device to the TNZ repair centre, if WM6.5 is available for the device, then it will automatically be upgraded at time of service, to WM6.5.

And, you'll see WM6.5 more-and-more, on TNZ WCDMA devices 'out of the box'.

Unlike CDMA, you will see TNZ less "restrained" bringing WCDMA ROM updates to Customers. CDMA ROM updates were a technical and business challenge; few ROMs made it. Hello to Okta Touch users out there..

Corporate or Enterprise Customers, managing a "fleet" of WM smart-phones within their organisation, should consider using MDM (Microsoft Deployment Manager) functionality, this is already available on a number of TNZ WCDMA WM devices and delivers "Blackberry" like functionality, such as secure email, "remote kill pill", etc. - WM6.5 simply "layers" a nice GUI.

The HTC HD2 looks nicer than the touch pro 2 though.

After work i went to check out the TP2 at the local telecom shop (Centreplace Mall, Hamilton). They didnt have any in stock. Couldnt be bothered checking out Leading Edge to see if they had any. Might try tomorrow.

The interesting thing is, there doesnt appear to be any Telecom customizations on it at all. I thought when released, it would be similar to Telstra's. From what i can see it's a completely clean WM 6.1/TouchFlo rom. Grabbed the manual from the website and there wasnt a single reference to anything about Telecom NZ.

On the Mobicity website, they have unbranded WCDMA 850/2100 TP2 for sale at $949.00 AUD

The interesting this is.. the manual for the TP2 on the Telecom site, is exactly the same as the manual from the mobicity site.

Had my Okta Touch for 2 yrs now (moved on from the Apache - decided to try no physical keyboard) - and I must admit I have found it to be pretty good. Don't manipulate Word docs etc on it (obvious keyboard, and screen, limitations!) but find the half-qwerty (soft) keyboard fine for the amount of txting I do.

I've got pretty big thumbs (!) but very rarely have to resort to the stylus, and have found it generally OK - especially with the addition of a few bits of SPB software to tart up the interface and make it more thumb-friendly!

Haven't tried any others to compare it to - but looking forward to the TP2 on the basis of what I have heard/seen in reviews. Does mean almost doubling the weight of the device - one downside - back to the bad old days of the Apache!!!

But good news about the apparent high degree of certainty around future options for WinMo 6.5 upgrade.

I never had one to be honest, but two of my friends did..
It was terrible, using that crappy stylus (didnt know you could use it without), not being able to do simple things like call numbers from txts or webpages, no copy and paste etc....

Other than the universal Windows copy and paste?? And mine seems to recognise numbers in texts?

I've also moved from Harrier -> Apache -> Touch, and aren't missing the keyboard as much as i though i would as i've recently settled on a keyboard similar to the iPhone one, with autocorrect etc. Seems to work quite well, although the autocorrect is annoying when incorrect.

Never use the sylus since upgrading to 6.5, which must be a good sign. Find it somewhat annoying having to readjust after cutting my nails though!

the stock telecom rom for the okta touch wasnt the greatest. the 6.1 upgrade by telecom made some good improvements to the UI. Plus there's lots of windows mobile software you can use to enhance. i had the okta touch for a bit and then flashed a custom rom as soon as i could. unlocked the gps and was running garmin xt.. this was months before the officia telecom upgrade. decided i needed the wifi got a titan, been flashing custom firmware on the titan for a year and a half now and been running wm6.5 beta builds for a few months. lost my stylus months ago!

went into leading edge today and grrr.. closed at 5pm and i finished work 5.30pm. Will go look tomorrow and hopefully they have the TP2 on hand so i can have a play. By the end of next week, I'll have a TP2.

I've emailed Brightpoint NZ and HTC NZ re if I buy a TP2 from aussie, can I drop it into the local agent which is Telegistics for repairs.

I look forward to the replies. If HTC NZ say they'll honour warranty repairs for Australia bought TP2, then naturally, I'll buy from Australia and save around $700 for an official HTC TP2!
