At about 9:40pm last night my connection went to sleep, so I disconnected but couldn't reconnect again, despite trying numerous times. Yet this morning I was able to connect almost immediately on the first attempt.

Just to recap: MF636 with T.03 software on Vista Business.

P.S. During the past 90 minutes, my connection has gone to sleep twice. On each occasion, disconnecting and reconnecting fixed it for a while.

i am able to see this problem only on my prepaid SIM and only if i am idle for more than 90 minutes. with my postpaid SIM i do not have the same problems. i am using the same sierra wireless device (885) for both SIMs
just wondering if that's the case for everybody else (problems only with prepaid).

Yes, my account is also prepaid on the 500MB plan.

No, it happens at any time for me. One minute it is fine, then when I finish reading a web page and click the next one, nothing happens. Try a different website, it doesn't respond either.

Disconnect / Reconnect and everything is OK again for a while. The time between occurrences seems to be completely random.

hmmm, thats strange. to me that sounds like signal strength issues although not 100% sure.
does this happen to you in different locations?
also, can you try running a continuous ping and see if it gets disconnected?

Not in my case. I have three different SIM cards, all on account, and the problem happens even during normal use. There's no idle time, since Outlook is always connected to the Exchange Server, and this happens even half way through a page load.

The problem happens with different modems so certainly not related to a specific hardware.

What VPN? There wasn't a mention of VPN before, unless I missed it?

I do use Hamachi though, but it stalls with Hamachi running or not.

my bad...when you said Outlook and Exchange server, I assumed you connect to your Exchange server via a company VPN. :)
in this case if it's not some issue on the radio part of the network I don't know what it could be. It's very unlikely that you are being disconnected by some Core network element (especially when you say this happens sometimes during a page load).

I also have this problem, but I had it on the old CDMA network too (though not as bad). It's always in consistent spots, so I assumed it was just black spots in the network.

The spots I've noticed it are a large of area around the corner of Dominion and Balmoral roads, the entire area around the St Lukes mall, a rather large area around the corner of Euston and Haverstock roads in St Lukes, and yet another large chunk around the corner of Balmoral and Mt Eden roads. Also, the entire western rail line between Glen Eden and Henderson.

The connection stays up, but no data passes across it until I leave the dead area. If I disconnect then reconnect, the reconnection fails with a message about the ppp server terminating the connection. That is, until I get outside the dead area and reconnect.

I just thought it was because the XT network had more holes than swiss cheese.

Well, like I said, I can see the cellsite towers from my lounge window. They are less than 2km away, so not surprisingly, the signal strength is a full 5 bars. So I don't really see how it could be a signal strength issue.

Yes, it happened in Penrose as well.

Like I said, I am constantly clicking links to open new web pages, at least every minute or two, and Skype is also running, so I don't see what good running a Ping is going to do. Windows Mail is also checking for new messages every 5 minutes, so it's not like my connection is idle for more than a minute or two on average. It shouldn't be necessary to run a background ping to keep it alive. After all: That's the whole point of broadband isn't it? Always On?

Nope... Microsoft BPOS, public facing Exchange Server via SSL. No VPN involved.

It happens in the middle of a page load. Or in the middle of a download - you see the progress bar going fast then it just stalls... And if you look in the Watcher no bytes coming down, only some bytes going up (requests?). But as I said it happens when not using the Watcher, for example when using a 3G WiFi router such as the Cradlepoint or TopGlobal.

It happens in the Wellington CBD (Astoria Cafe, Lambton Quay) every Wednesday when I am there for my weekly lunch with friends. It happens every time I go to Auckland and stay at the Rydges Hotel (Federal St) or The Grand SkyCity (Federal St). And a couple of other places there. It happened in Warkworth while there to attend the TelecomONE (funny, since TelecomONE is an internal Telecom unconfenrence open to some invited guests).

Thinking of that I don't remember it happening in Napier.

Can someone run a "ping -t x.x.x.x" and see if it dies out, i.e. continuous data flow.
Also if someone is in CHCH or WGTN or at least south of taupo let me know and I will run a live trace on your session.
