Aaroona: I tell you what, trying to download some files (using around 400kb/s) and trying to surf the web at the same time is a joke. :(

Not sure whether this is related to Plan or related to the other issue I'm having as well.

Cant wait till Tomorrow, when Dean (doozy) can look into it for me!

It's better than what I get with this plan. I browse and download at 10 kb/s. >_>

my download speed dropped to that when downloading a 4mb file (custom router firmware I was trying)

A few things I've found while using Bigtime is that browser downloads are really slow: roughly between 10kB/s and 40kB/s.

The funny thing that this has pushed me to use bittorrent to get these downloads now when the option is available: on a well supported swarm these speeds can push up to 160kB/s (though it does require a large number of seeds/peers) and also has the benefit of being able to resume if my connection falls off, which is almost inevitable on larger downloads.

This pretty much sums up the old adage that people will adapt their behaviour when faced with system constraints.

if you do browser downloads use Firefox and an addon called "DOWN THEM ALL"

Well, Telecom have made a nice screw up on my account.

They've linked the username to the wrong account number. Bravo job on that one.

Hopefully Doozy can provide some answers to my other problem, and hopefully something will get resolved Today.

Yeh we had a sales person come around on Saturday I think it was. He offered us a free modem worth $199 apparently (although I know Telecom must get them for like $50 from the manufacture) if we signed with them for 24 months. Dad thought it was ok since we wouldn't be switching anytime soon anyway. He recomended we switch to Big Time also. I asked if youtube, xbox live and general web browsing would be managed. He said "no definitely not. Only downloading large files will be". Can anyone tell me if this is the case? or is he telling me porkies? I wont know untill wednesday I think because he said thats when modem should arrive.

Telecom reserves the right to manage any traffic on the Bigtime plan. It's all very clear on the website. If someone else told you anything different, either they were mistaken or they misunderstood your question.

I'd never take the 24 month contract a lot can change in 2 years. If you use your own modem I think you can go on a 12 month contract instead (I think).

You can get your own brand new adsl modem/router for around $60 (eg: TP Link TD-8840 or DSE XH9949). This is the way to go if you don't care about wireless or you already have a wireless router you can link up with the new modem.

Couldnt agree more.

24 months is a hell of a long time in the Technology field.. in fact, it's a long time by all means.

A $200.00 modem is not worth an extra 12 months.

See I don't see why so many people buy a $59 unlimited internet plan and expect it to perform as well as the fibre you have at work.

If people want fast data instead of bulk data step up to the Telecom PRO plans.

I am on Big Time and it's sweet, I love it. No keeping count or worring about my bill, I download GB's on my xbox, watch streaming movies and torrent every so often. I also have a server on my connection and backup all of our work servers to my place every night and the connection performs as what I would expect for it's price.

I'm most happy with Big Time, and if I was not I'd up to a PRO Plan which are rocket fast.

Well when we break the contract, we only have to pay $199 for the price of the modem. We were buying a new one anyways, and this will save A LOT of space, at the moment we have a standard adsl modem, then we have a 8 port ethernet router, then i have a 4 port ethernet + wifi router in my room to connect iPod, psp and my phone. 3 power points will be replaced and i will only need one now. and the guy told us our current modem isnt adsl 2+ anyways so we would get a speed boost as well. But the guy also said, We can switch around the plans as much as we wish over the 2 years, we pretty much just have to keep our Telecom account open for the duration. Not to bad I guess, but its not like Vodafone can do any better anyways since Telecom does own the lines. Like I said, we're about due for a new modem anyways, so if we do need to switch providers, we might pay for it, but parents love the free national calling though since rest of our family is down south and hate Auckland. :D
