crazed: Looking at whats offered, I would tend to go with the following.

$29.95pm 256Kb/128kb Unlimited with 25Gb softcap. (Go over the softcap twice in 6 months and be automatically upgraded to 30Gb plan)

$49.95pm FS/FS 30GB $2 per GB Over Cap Or 64Kbps Cap

$79.95pm FS/FS 60GB $2 per GB Over Cap Or 64Kbps Cap

$99.95pm FS/FS 80GB $2 per GB Over Cap Or 64Kbps Cap

Only flaw with this is that people dont want to rack up huge phone / broadband bills , going over data. Nor do they want to spend heaps of money on a premium connection.

There needs to be some kind of plan, targeted at general internet use for the average household ( not p2p or mass downloading purposes ) , that will be capable of running games, email , and streaming video, & ensure users will get a better than dial up speed ( including crap 64kbps ).

It would need to let the user know that they shouldnt expect flash speeds. But speed enough to perform general family based internet activities, and will get a unlimited / large data cap.

All for a monthly fee with no extra charges.

The creators of big time & go large probably had the idea in mind that the plan would target households needing more data but not necessarily needing the " higher speeds " of a premium capped connection. Im guessing this hasnt quite played out how they expected & the staff managing / creating the plan didnt think it all through @ the beginning, ending us in this ordeal.

Do you know how much 1mbit of bandwidth costs? You'd be paying wholesale + profit for whatever that costs..
(Which is about $100 per mbit if you're huge, and $400-500 or $1000 per mbit/s if you're buy less)

So yes, you could get 2mbit/s unlimited data but you'll be paying at least $500/month.. So, going to sign up for that then?

(Note this is just bandwidth, no traffic caps at those prices)

No im not sure how much 1mbps costs.

But im quite sure telecom would be capable of providing * up to 1mbps connections * considering that Go Large & Big Time have both been more than 1mbit and especially big time at ADSL2+ speeds. ( 24mbps )

My intention of up to 1mbps is so that basic internet activites can still be done * unlike 64kbps * ,the mass downloaders probably wont be interested in such a small bandwidth allocation, general users could pay the $50 a month or so * just like big time * and not have to worry about data caps.

512kbps is still plenty for people who are happy to torrent 24/7 though (and they would :s)

I like the idea of daily cap plans better, that would seem to suit the market that Big Time was originally aimed at, families who want price certainty and not to be throttled for half the month because someone tried to go crazy downloading.

How about:
1GB/day for $50
2GB/day for $70
4GB/day for $100
- Stops big downloaders
- Prevents being stuck with throttle for days at end of month

Well, I could get 101gb from Orcon for $149.95 including line rental, so Telecom would have to either match this or beat it to keep me as a customer.

I think $2 per GB for overage, as Telecom will be implementing, is still too expensive.

Xnet is $1.06 per GB, and Telstraclears cable broadband is $2.95 for 2GB on their top 3 plans. Both of these prices have been at this level for a considerable time, so are obviously very doable.

Based on this, and on the fact that SXC pricing has been getting cheaper, I believe anything more than $1 per GB overage is too much.

k1wi: Based on my bigtime usage....

1. unmetered upload (such as they had over the summer).
2. unmetered or fractional metered national traffic (i.e. 1 unit of national traffic == .1 unit of international traffic).
3. offpeak usage either unmetered or fractionally metered as in # 2.
4. normal peak international usage metered as per now.

I really like number 3. Say have off-peak counted as 0.25 or something. So 4GB of off-peak usage only counts as 1GB. That way you can have one monthly cap but are encouraged to shift usage to off-peak times, but you don't have too if you don't want.

Unlimited uploads as in number 1 would also be great.

Both of these could be implemented without any huge change in the current plan design.

Fair enough those plans wouldn't suit you then, but I wasn't talking about heavy users, just families who want to pay a set price per month for a service that will be available for every day of that month, which was the idea behind Big Time (Incidentally I'm pretty sure that 90% of NZ households wouldn't blow a 2GB/day cap, as thats about the number of people on 20GB/month or less plans still).

I wouldn't get any hopes up around Telecom bringing out a new high-usage plan which doesn't also have a hefty price tag though.

Even 256k would be alright, just some thing that works (if only just) after you hit your cap. They could lower the cap to offset the cost of the 256k too.

I belong to a family of five. We were with Actrix on their 350MB per day plan. It was horrible, but managable. If Telecom managed to give us 2GB per day for 60 or 70 odd dollars at full speed, I would jump at that. Currently with daily plans I think Actrix has it in the bag with 800MB per day though.

Daily allowances wouldn't work as once you hit it your either paying overages or put back to throttled speed, which if you've ever experienced throttled speed on adsl2 you know you never want to again !
They won't throttle you to 256K - why would they? you can still do a hell of a lot with that. It'll be either dialup or 64k, not much difference anyway between the 2 on adsl.

How about:
30GB/month for $49.95
60GB/month for $69.95
120GB/month for $99.95

When the limit is reached a choice of being throttled in speed to 64k or paying overages or being able to buy a 5 or 10 gig block to addon to your monthly allowance so at least you still stay full speed but just wouldn't d/l

Now while all of the suggestions we are making seem logical or good to us, lets face facts, its all upto the ones that provide the service in the end - telecom !

Hmm, while I dont have any input over plans, I thought I might post some personal feedback.

Explorer 10Gb is $49-95
Adventure 20Gb is $59-95

It doesnt seem realistic to suggest 30Gb for Explorers price? Or a plan 50% larger than ro for $10 less? Also, bear in mind that BT is cancelled, that doesnt mean it will be replaced.

But some interesting ideas.

Yeah, I made the mistake of messing a plan change up and being throttled for 2 days a couple of months ago, never again!

I think the idea of being throttled for at most a few hours in the evening and then having it back to full speed the next morning is better than having to keep track of your cap and possibly being throttled for days.

Obviously not something for everyone, but like I said more suitable for families who just want it to work at full speed when they get home from work/school, and want to be able to budget exactly how much it's going to cost them.

I agree, it would suit some users very well - but other users (like me) would find it too rigid. I haven't seen breakdowns of usage statisics or anything, but I would have thought that looking at all users over the full month the daily usage would average itself out anyway with a standard monthly cap (if that makes sense).

I'm not getting my hopes up for ANY new plans from Telecom. But I am willing to pay a FAIR price for high usage, and I hope telecom will look at some of these suggestions very seriously.

It seems to me that one of the goals of BigTime was to try to shift more usage into off-peak times (especially that of heavy users), and I think any plans that cater to heavy users should have incentives to try to get the downloaders to use off-peak whereever possible.
