We have been with Telecom (Phone and Internet) since the dial up days but no such offer was given to us. Having 4 PCs and a PS3 using the Internet its hard trying to stay within the data cap.

I called up Telecom once to see what's up with this double data promo, but the rep insisted it was only for new customers only.

Oh well, the reality is life sucks for some people.

Funny how it mainly happens to people with bad attitudes. I say mainly, because in your case it's obviously Telecom's fault.

Did you ask to speak to homeline solutions or just Their sales team?

The best you are going to get is a Free modem / router for 12month contract from them.

I don't get this whole mentality of people somehow feeling they are "owed" double data just because someone else got it? If you really, really need that much data, surely there are other ISP's that can offer this for you? No one is holding a gun at your head and making you stay with Telecom, are they?

Seriously, some people in this thread are making it sound like they've been "victorious" because they somehow triumphed over Telecom - I don't understand it (can someone enlighten me please?).

I called the 0800 number for Broadband & Internet.

Free modem/router?
The rep didn't mention anything regarding any kind of offers, but I suppose that's my problem since I didn't ask for it.

Just tell them your current is faulty and you heard they replace it if you sign up for 12 months.

Ring the 0800 number and ask to be transferred to Home Line Solutions. If they ask say you got told to speak to them in regards to a Promotional Upgrade.

No, they're not making me stay...other isp's have better plans for less money, which is what I told them. I said I would have to leave if they couldn't offer more data, which I would have done if they hadn't. Does it hurt to ask?

I watch NHL and gridiron online, my son games, and there are 2 other computers using data, so 40GB just doesn't cut it anymore. Telecom haven't kept up with the times, and don't seem to realize that there is a lot of content online that people watch/download, so their plans are out of date. If you could buy extra data blocks that would help, but they don't even offer that.

So...I can't remember who the telecom people are here, but if you can, could you kick it up the line that your plans need an overhaul? Thanks :-D

I completely agree there are heaps of legal contents online now, e.g. Apple TV streams HD youtube videos and film rentals etc. and that's a lot of GBs.

No, I don't feel Telecom 'owes' me anything.
I called and politely asked about double data, there's nothing wrong with that.

Maybe not you two, but it's the feeling I get from some people in this thread...never mind, it's probably just me.

Did you ask to be put through to homeline soloutions.  That is the most important step.

The person whom answered my call didn't even know Homeline Solutions existed, I had to be put on hold for ages.

The normal phone reps know nothing and can't help.

And in regards to the other poster with a negative attitude..

I don't feel telecom owes me anything.  I rang up to see if there was anything they could do to give me more bandwidth.  If they had said no, I would have explored other ISP's.  It does not hurt to see if they could help out.

But, in todays technological world and having a family that enjoys the internet, Telecom, New Zealands main provider for Broadband services "should" be able to offer bigger data bundles or data addon packs.

Quickymart: I don't think this is true at all and I definately don't think that I am deserved it just because someone else got it.. But mind you I probably would've moved next year if a better offer came up if I hadn't got Double Data..

The internet is using a lot more data now even with just web page sizes not to mention streaming TV, movies, program updates.. All legal stuff. Have a look at the file sizes next time you do a windows update on your computer ? Not to mention all those background programs eating away at you broadband allowance all the time.
Where a 1 or 2 gig a month connection would have been enough 2 or 3 years ago, it doesn't last very long at all now as most households would have only one computer then,
There are currently 5 laptops and one desktop in this house all connected to the internet. Schools require all kids to have their own computer now !!

I think that telecom are trying to save customers after the bigtime closure. There is a lot more competition in the broadband market now which is good as they don't have the big monopoly anymore like they had before.

Hey, If giving someone double data for 12 months keeps them there, then they will most likely still be there after the 12 months is up which is how they are thinking.. I most likely will be now !
What is so wrong about that ?? Its called good business practice - look after loyal long term customers !

I think that homeline solutions at telecom is the department that does that. Saves telecom customers from going elsewhere, once they go its hard to get them back as people don't like change !!
I think its also only available in the High density areas where they would have a choice of multipile other providers to move to which is why they check to see if its available in your area.

Hey - They have kept me for another 12 months or more as they have lot of others now who were almost ready to jump.

I'm now giving them $141 a month for total home + pro.
Times that by 1000 people = $141,000 a month
Times that by 10,000 people = $1,410,000 a month
What business can afford to lose more than 1 million a month  ??
