So you support the 3-strikes law? This is why we can't have nice things. Lets just start censoring peoples speech in real life and inserting ADs into people conversations to please our great dear leader corporations.

If it didn't take such a huge amount of capital I would start a ISP myself and ignore every DMCA requests that where ever sent. Why are corporations treated like gods in New Zealand?

I see what you did there, you actually took the 'also' out of my quote. The sane move I was referring to using static IPs instead of dynamic pools. My reference to the 3strikes legislation was that the move as an addition makes it easier for Telecom to comply with the law of the land.

My personal opinion on the 3strikes legislation is not relevant to either of my replies (personally, I'm still to read it, only made judgements based on other's interpretations). As for censoring people's speech, my understanding of the 3strikes law is just about (as already pointed out) enforcing copyright legislation.

Surely if you get your 1st strike under the new legislation, you will need to change your internet behavior - just like the rest of us. Static IP or Dynamic IP. It does not make a difference.

And if you are innocent - you appeal (have not fully read the legislation yet) - but surely there would be a avenue to appeal.

Then with all these people who may or may not be innocent, appealing - then the system will get inundated with paperwork, taking up their pressure time and costing them money - that maybe, just maybe - this new legislation goes bye bye.

Whether the IP address is a static, dynamic, or 'subscriber assigned' - it is largely trivial to trace it back to an account holder with just the IP address and a timestamp.

That was my experience when I wrote a spam complaint processing app that is used by a major ISP. Given the information is provided by existing copyright notices, I dear say that there will be enough information to identify subscribers whether you keep the same IP or not.

Instead of complaining, the OP should try changing the law or work to create a new way of distributing content legally. Breaking the law is just that, breaking the law.

Yes it does. You have escape from someone UDP flooding you with a decated offshore servers. Do you expect the a home user to have to know sever harding or tunnel though a VPN to avoid heavy Ddos attacks?

Simple answer to that... DON'T do anything to cause people to want to DDOS you. People with botnets etc who have they ability to do these attacks usually have much more valuable use of their time than to ddos a home internet connection of one person. Typically they will be using them to take down websites etc or spam.

In all the time I've been in IT I've never heard of someone getting DDOS'd to a personal connection, only every servers. So if you keep getting these attacks maybe you should change your internet habits.

anyway, what gives you the right to expect a dynamic IP address? when the IP protocol was first built, it was designed for static addresses, not dynamic. dynamic came later.

What gives ISPs to make changes to services you pay hard earned money for (Over priced in NZ to) without any notice or word of it.

The fact you BUY the service from them. When you agreed to your contract when you signed up, you would have agreed to all these terms stating they can change your connection without notice and the only guaranty of IP address allocation is to buy a static IP like many people do already.

Like plenty of other people have said, If you don't like what Telecom has done. There are plenty of other ISP's in New Zealand that still hand out dynamic ip addresses that refresh every time your modem disconnects that would be more than willing to take your business away from Telecom. Judging by the spelling & structure of all your posts here I am taking a wild guess here and taking you're not the account holder, your parents are.

His initial rant was pretty funny too. As another poster pointed out the ISP can work out who you are from the IP and address date/time, they don't need the address to be static to do this.

It's probably harder for ISPs with older management systems to identify the customer with the static address, identifying for a dynamic address is usually pretty easy.
