They not forcing true static IPs rather you will not get a new IP unless you leave your modem/router off for a month!

The "advanced Internet problems" technician hinted that this was related to a change of system with all ISPs for the three strike law.

Anyone who sign up after January with be put into one of these IP pools. This is a horrid for security and gaming.

I don't care if you say "Well it's all good because if your banned from a server you should be forever" or "People who don't do anything wrong won't care about this".

This was not outline in the contract. I am now forced to use a Vodem on a 4GB plan just because they have a good IP pool.

How much does a off shores satellite connect cost. I am not supporting NZ ISP that offer this sort of service and bend over and take it from governments pressured from the corporate world.
AHHH I AM SO MAD. Yell

for years everyone whinged when telecom wouldnt give them a static ip. now they whinge when they do get one. cant please everyone.

anyway, what gives you the right to expect a dynamic IP address? when the IP protocol was first built, it was designed for static addresses, not dynamic. dynamic came later.

having a static ip does not cause security issues - poor security causes security issues.

in one sentence you say static ip is bad for gaming, yet in another you talk about satellite service? surely the 600ms of latency is worse for you gaming than the static ip...

and finally, dont whine about the service. if you dont like it, move to another isp. you have a choice, use it.

Security shouldn't matter provided you have some form of firewall, and nobody in their right mind doesn't these days!

This won't affect gaming at all, unless you're doing something to cause yourself to continually get banned from servers. In which case the problem isn't the ISP but you.

k1w1: I don't care if you say "Well it's all good because if your banned from a server you should be forever" or "People who don't do anything wrong won't care about this".

Even though those people are right.

I can't imagine that your contract said anything about guaranteeing a new IP on every connect, either.

Static IPs are OPT-IN. You have a choice.

Yes it does. You have escape from someone UDP flooding you with a decated offshore servers. Do you expect the a home user to have to know sever harding or tunnel though a VPN to avoid heavy Ddos attacks?

Better then a nanny state ISP ( To the corporate world ) that are only interested in lining their own pockets then providing "free" information. We need a pirate ISP like in Sweden.

What gives ISPs to make changes to services you pay hard earned money for (Over priced in NZ to) without any notice or word of it.

So apart from the inability to spell Telecom, you are upset because you will be unable to evade ban resulting from your own misbehaviour?  (Granted not all bans are due to misbehaviour, but....)

If a server/service administrator decides they don't want to do business with you, then you should take the hint, otherwise, they are going to just keep banning you, ban a whole netblock, or even start pestering abuse@ contacts.

I haven't seen the fact that a dynamic IP address is in any contracts (although true static IPs have either been by request or extra charge with Telecom), so they don't seem to be breaking any contracts.

Also, seeing that most people keep their modems on 24/7, it makes more sense to just static assign IPs these days, and it also helps lower costs with regards to logging IP assignments for the new 3strikes law, which means hopefully better/same plans for the same cost.

I applaud Telecom for this sane move.

I don't expect a normal home user to do anything to make someone want to do that to them :)

You must really make a lot of enemies!

ISPs own the network elements your modem is connected to so they have every right how things work.

show me a contract that you signed that outlined the type of IP address you were going to be guaranteed. something you *will* find in there is the bit that says 'we reserve the right to change this contract any time we see fit" or something along those lines.

i've been on the internet for around 20 years now, i've never been ddosed or udp flooded. what are you doing to piss people off so much?

Especially as one dynamic IP customer's misbehaviour can cause problems for other customers. You restart your modem to get a new IP, some other person gets that IP and finds themselves unable to connect to game servers, or unable to send email because they've ended up on spam blocklists.

So you support the 3-strikes law? This is why we can't have nice things. Undecided Lets just start censoring peoples speech in real life and inserting ADs into people conversations to please our great dear leader corporations.

If it didn't take such a huge amount of capital I would start a ISP myself and ignore every DMCA requests that where ever sent. Why are corporations treated like gods in New Zealand?

Spamming? Hacking people's game accounts? Those are the only lines of work I can think of that would be likely to cause such a thing.
