Wow, I'd be all over a free TiVo for signing up again, my mobile contract expired over a year ago and my home broadband expired about 2 weeks ago - so let us know if there are in fact any really _useful_ freebies up for grabs for a resign!

I thought I would share with this thread that I had a Telecom staff member come and visit me at home and offer me a free Tivo.  In some way it must be a fun job offering people a free PVR STB. More happy customers.

It was with great sadness I told him I was an employee and thus wasn't eligible. :(

So I hope everyone does enjoy their boxes. Tivo's are great :)

That is the one problem with living up a 100m driveway, no door-to-door salespeople (okay, it's generally a blessing, but if it's no/low catch free Tivo then I want to move to the 'burbs! ;))

Unfortunately our plan doesn't expire until May/June so I'd imagine that Telecom would be all out of free TiVos by then.

H'mm well despite the PM back on 29 Feb I've still yet to hear from anyone!

I'm basically in the same position as trig42 was, only with TelstraClear.

Been with them for a few years now, so well out of contract, and have been keen on the $75 deal they have been advertising ($75 for phone, broadband with 40GB data limit, free wireless modem, and 2 months free).

Currently paying $115 for phone, broadband with 20GB data limit, and free national tolls (but i don't really need the free national calls any more)

Phoned them to see if i could get this $75 deal, was told "Nope, only for new customers". Expressed my feelings about that, and as a "compromise" they offered me a $95 plan for phone, broadband with 40GB limit, but no free national calls, no free modem and no 2 months free.

They actually told me that i'd have to cancel my TelstraClear account, sign up with someone else, and then re-sign up with them to get this deal. I even asked if it could be escalated to someone higher up, and was again told "Nope, it's company policy".

If i'm going to have to go through that kind of rigmarole just for them to retain my business, i'll just stick with whoever i switch to - and i told them that. Their response was "So be it" - they were quite happy to lose me as a customer.

It's all kind of left me with a really bad taste in my mouth over TelstraClear, so i'm currently looking to ditch them.

Someone else i know mentioned that they believed "new customer" deals also, by law, had to be offered to existing customers. When i Googled it, this thread came up, hence me registering and now posting.

I can't seem to find anything about that on the Commerce Commission website - anyone else know whether that's the case?  :)

On the contrary, I don't think it is the law that new customer deals have to be offered to existing, some companies eat this out of the marketing budgets, not as the 'cost of doing business', and is common place in most industry types, and most countries now. It's only good business practices to create a brand loyalty with existing customers, (even more so, now it's so much easier to compare things/find the cheapest option) as people just don't really consider any loyalty to any one brand, not just ISPs, but Banks, Supermarkets, anything these days, it's just so easy to compare and switch.

Edit: P.S., Welcome to Geekzone :)

Yeah i can understand that.

It just doesn't sit very well with me, seems to be rewarding new customers and to hell with the existing ones. I'd think a company as big as TelstraClear would have a bit of leeway with which to allow existing customers to take up a deal such as this, rather than potentially kiss goodbye to any cash revenue at all from said existing customer.

I guess that loyalty you mention could also simply be due to the pain of switching to another company, particularly with your examples of ISP's and Banks. One of those "Out of the frying pan, into the fire"/"Better the devil you know" sort of situations.

I've lurked around these parts for a while now - about time i joined up :)
