Yes unless you live really far away from the exchange or have a dodgy line/wiring.

So I've been on bigtime for just over a month now and it isn't too bad.
I have found one thing though that is a bit annoying.
I use another smtp server to send mail, telecom obviously block port 25 so i send on another port.
However it seems like they are really killing outgoing smtp traffic. If i try and send an attachment of a few megs it takes minutes.. and usually aborts part way through saying there is a problem with the connection.
If I upload the attachments via the web interface to the remote mail server it takes a matter of seconds..

Anyone else struck this? or no one else using another smtp server to send? :)

I can't really see why they would do this.. as blocking port 25 prevents people from running an smtp server which seems to be the only thing they might be worried about.. (also that the plan isn't on a static ip)..
Can anyone else test this and see if they have this problem?

Well definitely nice to be able to use pot 25 again but doesn't really explain why smtp is being so throttled on a non standard port.. anyway ill try port 25 and see how that goes..

I use yahoo smtp (.com.au) on port 465 and it goes pretty quick.
No throttling on big time there for me.

Hi there.

I'm new to this forum.

I have asked many questions about this broadband plan and I was hoping I would get some info from you guys about how the plan is operating after about 3 months. I'm on the Vodafone 20GB Broadband Plan at the moment and I run out in 15 days on this plan and end up paying an extra $30 for more data!!! I really want to change to the big time plan but I was hoping to get some responses from you guys whether its worthwhile doing it. I only really use my broadband for Uni work and youtube from time to time but thats it. No torrents etc. YouTube is starting to become slow and I can't even watch any HD clips as it buffers every 5 seconds. :-(

Vodafone wasn't very friendly about my question about unlimited broadband in the future for Vodafone and couldn't give me much info whether they will have a unlimited broadband plan soon.

I found your thread and thought most of you guys are on the plan. After so many months on being on the plan, could you give me a short review on whether its worth changing to telecom big time plan. I used to be on a telecom plan about 3 years ago but we had so many problems with it. Could you list your speed test results.

It will be great to hear from you guys

I was with Vodafone boradband and home phone (20Gb plan) I too was running out of data and was back to dial up speed for some of the month.

The performance on Big Time has been excellent, I've found it faster in everyway than Vodafone's broadband.

I couldn't watch You Tube on Voadfone, but it's fine on Big Time.

For me it's costing about $8 more than Vodafone so i'm quite happy.

Firstly, Welcome!

I have been on Bigtime for about 2 months now, was on the Toal Home 20GB, so same price for me. Youtube, http download, browsing, gaming still the same for me as when I was on the 20GB plan (would have been on the 40GB if you weren't charged extra if you go over.) I used to run out about a week into the month. Managed to go through roughly 250GB last month:

Youtube/TVNZ on demand (60GB)

An amount of suspicious traffic that sister denies is torrents (50 GB)

Download game demos and other things from Playstation Network for PS3 (120 GB)

Other various downloads (10 GB)

Browsing (5GB)

Gaming and Webcam (5GB)

So yeah, am pretty happy. I am quite far from the exchange, so Youtube didn't stream well in HD for me, though it seems better with the cache. I guess those on ADSL2+ would be better to ask there. Jan 2010 is when I will really know, as that is when i getting cabnetised :) But no-one in the house has noticed a drop in speed. But as it was the same price as the 20GB I was recieving, I was stoked. Anyway, if you aren't torrenting/p2p file sharing then you shouldn't really be affected by the traffic shaping. It is shocking how much bandwidth youtube takes up though......

I was also on the Go Large when it was around all those years ago, and I think this is way better than that was. Had nothing but problems with Go Large. Is that the plan you were on, because I think that was like 3 years ago now.

With regard to speed, pre Bigtime I was about 2500kb/s down, 700kb/s up. Lately I have been getting 3000kb/s down, 800kb/s up. So I am actually getting faster speeds, though I think this is more to do with all the Chorus vans that are around my area doing (I think) pre-cabnetisation work rather than the plan change.

Great email from Paulthagerous but as I read it he has great downloads by volume for the stuff that is not realtime, great for TVNZ which is domestic, and the rest like HD Youtubes is marginal.

Not my idea of a great broadband service.

It is is ok, if you don't care about time sensitive things then you will like it.
streaming is so so, very marginal - I get lots of cut outs with streaming video and im on adsl2 with about a 8000 kilobit connection.
I came from an Orcon 105 gig plan and orcon was definitely far snappier but you get what you pay for of course.

Thanks for the quick reply and the information you sent me. I wasn't on the Go Large Plan but I had a 30GB Plan with Telecom. I heard some bad things about the Go Large Plan.

With Telecom a few years ago, my broadband would randomly shut off and Telecom had continuously had problems in my area and thats why I switched to Vodafone.

Is torrenting really that bad with the plan? My sister uses alot too. My sis always tells me she gets from 300mb/s to 700mb/s for downloading but we seem to run out after half of the month. Do you think other ISP's will be bringing their own unlimited broadband plan soon? If Telecom can, I'm sure other ISP's should be bringing something similar or at least 70GB - 100GB data cap for $100.

Torrenting is fine here - the speed isn't as fast as it was when the plan was introduced but it is still very good for the price you pay.

Last month we did over 400GB down and 100 up, not downloading constantly.

Cached Youtube and common downloads speed is excellent - up to 1.5MBps.
Uncached Youtube vids and other downloads are noticeably slower compared to Adventure but still reasonable - up to 300KBps during the day.

Web browsing and email speed is very good.
