tunafish: Great email from Paulthagerous but as I read it he has great downloads by volume for the stuff that is not realtime, great for TVNZ which is domestic, and the rest like HD Youtubes is marginal.

Not my idea of a great broadband service.

The below quote shows why I am probably not the best person to talk about HD Youtube...

OmniouS: Torrenting is fine here - the speed isn't as fast as it was when the plan was introduced but it is still very good for the price you pay.

Last month we did over 400GB down and 100 up, not downloading constantly.

Cached Youtube and common downloads speed is excellent - up to 1.5MBps.
Uncached Youtube vids and other downloads are noticeably slower compared to Adventure but still reasonable - up to 300KBps during the day.

Web browsing and email speed is very good.

If Youtube HD can go at 1.5MB/s, and my line can only do a fifth that speed, I am not realistically going to be able to use it until I get ADSL. This, in my case at least, is not the plan's fault - it's my distance from the exchange.

johnrutter: Thanks for the quick reply and the information you sent me. I wasn't on the Go Large Plan but I had a 30GB Plan with Telecom. I heard some bad things about the Go Large Plan.

With Telecom a few years ago, my broadband would randomly shut off and Telecom had continuously had problems in my area and thats why I switched to Vodafone.

Is torrenting really that bad with the plan? My sister uses alot too. My sis always tells me she gets from 300mb/s to 700mb/s for downloading but we seem to run out after half of the month. Do you think other ISP's will be bringing their own unlimited broadband plan soon? If Telecom can, I'm sure other ISP's should be bringing something similar or at least 70GB - 100GB data cap for $100.

I guess it depends by what you mean 'bad'. It will almost certainitly go a lot slower during the day, but you can do it continuously. When I download WOW patches for a friend via torrent (which are usually well seeded) it cruises along at 150 KiloBytes/second. I dunno if you would consider that bad or not. At the end of the day, she should be able to do a lot more, it just may take a bit longer.

I found your thread and thought most of you guys are on the plan. After so many months on being on the plan, could you give me a short review on whether its worth changing to telecom big time plan. I used to be on a telecom plan about 3 years ago but we had so many problems with it. Could you list your speed test results.

I have not been on Vodafone, but I can tell you about Big Time vs Go Large.
First of all, when I first cut over to big time the youtube cache didn't seem to be working correctly, But I did cut over pretty much the day they offered it, so I expected a couple of blips. I'm roughly 2.6km from the exchange and I was syncing at 8 megabit once I cut over to big time. My kids love the internet here as opposed to at their mothers as their mothers "stops and starts all the time".
The youtube cache has made a BIG difference, I would have normally started a HD on youtube, pause it and let it get at least 3/4 of the way through before I'd even think about playing it. Now I just play it.

When I first cut over I ran a test, downloading 16 gig from MSDN overnight (So it's not cached data). It happened averaging 2 gig an hour. We now have the new cabinets in place and I'm averaging 6 gig an hour from MSDN. (Connecting at 14 megabit to the cabinet)

Big Time (As I have been told in this discussion) was only optimised for ADSL, not ADSL2+ so there is no real comparision.
Telecom do reserve the right to slow down certain types of traffic during peak hours. Do they do it, Heck yes.
Would it affect you in the way you describe how you use your connection. No. My internet games, Wii, general browsing all work great.
The limiting factors for you would be distance from the exchange, if you have an ADSL2+ capable modem (Most people do now), and line quality.
My brother's connection in Mosgiel is rubbish comparitively no matter what ISP he uses. Overhead lines swinging around in the breeze will eventually get worse. Line quality can also be affected by flakey in-house wiring.

Do you know what your current connection speed is?

It would seem as of this morning telecom have started to manage traffic from certain sites in a very heavy handed way.. My download speeds have dropped by a massive amount from these sites compared to over the last 2 months. It had to happen sometime.. The honeymoon period is over I guess :)

Could be something entirely different? Perhaps your connection only? Have you restarted the modem?

Until we have reports from many others having the same problem we can only presume it's a localised incident...

Well yes I guess I jumped the gun a bit, assumptions are always bad, especially based on a brief amount of activity.
I usually get decent speeds from Megaupload, as of today I am getting approximately 1/8th of the speed I normally get. However as I am typing this message, they have jumped back up to my normal speeds.
Forgive me, next time I will be more patient before I make such wild accusations. I assume I just got unlucky on some particular megaupload servers that might have been a lot slower.

So, in summary
Telecom's plan is still good for general use.
Don't make rash accusations (like me)
I aplogise to all for the false alarm and next time will take more time before making a post like that.

Hi everyone,

I am thinking about changing over to the new unlimited download plan (when my contract with Vodafone expires). I do a bit of downloading but I'm not too concerned if that runs a bit slowly as long as it works.

My main problem would be watching streaming videos. I like watching live sports online, so I was wondering what the speeds are like for watching live streaming video, if anyone knows?

If that works ok, and normal web browsing is fast, then I will likely change over. P.S I live in Central Auckland so being in the wrong area shouldn't be a problem.

One example is gamecenter.nhl.com

Usually I'm watching streams that are about 700k, sometimes a little higher

Hey guys,

Thanks for all your help with this broadband plan.

My dad won't switch from Vodafone to Telecom because of some deal he gets for landline and mobile calls but I've decided to pay for my own broadband connection.

Here are some some facts:

- My dad is on the Vodafone 20GB Deal ($90/month)
- He's with Vodafone for phone and broadband
- I want to go on the Telecom Big Time Plan ($59/month)

My questions are these:

1) Is it alright that my dad has Vodafone broadband for himself and I have Telecom Broadband in my room. (I think I have to required switches/filters etc) or isn't I possible to have two broadband plans in one house.

2) Will I have to pay for home calling with Telecom? Or can I just use the broadband connection with Telecom (and pay an extra $10 per month) with the big time plan.
