timmmay: I tried mobile data in the middle of Lambton Quay today. It still said H+ on my phone, so I assumed it still wasn't working. Are there any tricks needed to get 4G going on a rooted i9505?

There is definately excellent 4G coverage in the CBD now with all the Telecom sites in WN CBD live with LTE1800. If you do manage to find an App to expose the hidden radio menu on the S4 - it's something like "LTE/GSM (auto PRL)"... However it seems that getting LTE going and rooted Android devices can be a bit problematic, and the most predictable results occur with stock firmware.

The network modes I have available are

WCDMA/GCM (auto connect)
WCDMA only
GSM only

Seems like I need to do some kind of an update. I'm not willing to install Knox as I understand it affects my ability to root.

stevenz: You could download the latest official firmware from samfirmware.com and flash it using MobileOdin with the "Injectroot" option.

If the Mobile Networks --> Network Mode option doesn't list the LTE/WCDMA/GSM option then you will probably need a newer firmware, or some CSC hackery.

This sounds interesting. Alternately there's some "echo" ROM thingy that's meant to be the stock, minus knox, plus a few bits and pieces. Would that be likely to work?

Honestly what I had before is fine for me, but if I can get 4G working why not?

I'm running the latest Echoe ROM on KitKat. No Knox.And it gives me these options 2g 3g 4g. I've set it to 4g. Its usually on H+ but nowhere any 4g spots in Hamilton to find out if it works. Baseband is MJ5.

Unfortunately we can't make any public comments around specific cities or towns we're deploying to next. There is LOT of planning currently underway around this.

Ok so I got LTE working.

EchoeRom FAQ at "LTE is not working, how can i fix it?"

1. Using Root Explorer or an analogous app go to data >property>persist.radio.lteon.xml open the file in Text Editor and change the value to true. Save and Exit and Reboot.
2. I then went into settings -> connections -> more networks -> mobile networks -> network mode. LTE was an option so I selected it and rebooted.
3. I turned on mobile data. It still said H+. I went back to the file in step 1 and changed it back to false, and rebooted.
4. Turned mobile data on, it said 4G.

So it probably shouldn't work. LTE doesn't show in the network mode options, but oh well, I'm not complaining.

And here's the speedtest.net result, from about 100m from the beehive, 8 floors up, with the phone beside the window.

might have been covered but I got a question -

4G is completely different from 3G in terms of frequency yes?

So if telecom deployed many 850MHz towers to cover far and wide, now they want to do 2100MHz 4G they need more towers closer together?? or let the borders be void of 4g and fall back on 3G?

They are currently using 1800 for 4G.

Our 4G netowork is built using 1800MHz. We have employed several techniques to ensure that our LTE1800 network, comes close to what the WCDMA850MHz network provides. There will be some areas where you do fallback to 3G or the signal levels on LTE1800 look different to WCDMA850. The coverage maps online are you best indicator of what coverage you'll experience.

My 4G Experience:

Signed for for new Ultra Plans in September
Saw 4G announcement - assumed my SIM was 4G (even though dates were wrong, I am an idiot)
Impatiently waited for launch, super excited!
Launch happened - no 4G, realised my mistake
Went to 4G website - requested SIM
Waited 10 days - went back to website, tried form again - you are already ready for 4G
Rang Business Hub - nothing on your account - where would you like us to drop one off?

In short - I am an idiot - should have just rung Business Hub straight away - should have 4G by tonight.

....first world problems... :). But yes in building coverage can be variable depending on construction type, height, etc.

Lol i guess the fact that i can get h+ in 99% of my 9 storey concrete building including liftwell and stairwells says how much i'm dependant on telecom ... Tried voda over the weekend and stairwells and liftwells were no good ... Toilets were great though :) that's probably where you want your stuff yo load fast isnt it ... But that's probably revealing too much of one's bowel habit ...
