Yeah understand that. At the end of the day it is just Telecom trying to make extra $$. They have had a rough time lately nd their profits are way down. It doesn't them cost more to offer full speed on the uplink as they pay for the size of the pipe not the traffic so they can kill the old plan and move people to the new one and charge them an extra 10 a month it costs them nothing more but of course adds to their profit, 10 isn't too much but given the amount of people on the plan it all adds up of course.
This is a company that is getting hammered from every direction right now (and rightly so). I am sure they are under pressure from their shareholders to squeeze some more $$. Looks like they will be regulated in the cell market also after having ripped everyone off for a decade or so and still trying to (along with vodafone)...(grumble grumble)

Anyway at the end of the day, it is a decent plan still, things in a few years should be more interesting hopefully with the promise of fibre etc. Hopefully we will be looking back on adsl as we do on dialup now :)

Well they aren't a charity and no one else has stepped up to offer a competing plan so Big Time is still the cheapest and fastest heavy downloader plan.

The nearest options are Xnet torrential or one of Slingshot plans but you pay for on peak (free off peak only) and both are much worse speed wise in the offpeak.

Honestly $120 a year isn't very much, think of is this way.. ~260 work days in the year (assuming 5 work days per week) which means there is ~2080 work hours (assuming 8 hours per day). The average wage in NZ is ~33K and 33K over 2080 hours is ~$15 per hour... at $15 per hour $120 is ~7 hours or less that one days work.

Like the above poster said, talk with your wallet and move ISP, if you can find someone who will allow a 50 - 60gb plan for the $59 or $79 cost then that's the best way that you'lll tell Telecom that it's new plan isn't great...

Hey Guys,

I recently applied for the Big Time Plan on Telecom and receved this message:

Thank you for your application for Telecom Broadband on *********

We are unable to process your application for the following reason(s):
This phone number is invalid or not currently connected to the Telecom network. Telecom Broadband is only available to customers with a valid, connected Telecom phone number.

Are there alternatives to let me use two broadband plans from different ISP's as my father is not wanting to switch from Vodafone to Telecom completely?

- Our Vodafone Broadband Plan is on our fax machine number but we want to use Telecom Broadband on our Home Number.
-We have a router downstairs for Vodafone but I can fit a router upstairs for Telecom.
-We don't want to change our calling plan from Telecom to Vodafone but we want our home number to be Telecom Broadband since our Vodafone broadband is on our fax number.

Could you please state any extra costs if it is possible to go on this plan and keep Vodafone's plan for my father.

The reason of getting the Big Time Plan:

I too am thinking about purchasing an PSP Go but the problem is that there UMD downloads will range from 500MB to 900MB.

20GB Plan on Vodafone is not enough when you have 5 people in the family who use broadband daily. My last month's bill totalled up tp $200 for 20GB Plan + excessive usage.

Conclusion: Why bother with fast speed broadband when it is already decent. We need bigger data caps or unlimited broadband. I'm sure may people agree with me. It's great that we have this $1.5 billion broadband Initiative but will it mostly go into speeding up our broadband with fibre optic cable or will it increase our data caps? If it was data caps, it could be done much quicker than changing all our copper wired networks into fibre optics cables.

Feel free to reply your thoughts.

Definitely caps need to go up or disappear, traffic is only to going to become more and more in demand. In the USA, many sites now offer streaming or download of quality movies legally, some are even free sites.
In new zealand tvnz offer some episodes also but the amount of content here is pitiful compared to the states. anyway things like this are going to become way more popular, video stores will become obsolete (don't buy shares in them anytime soon).
Demand for higher quality streamed videos will of course be next, 720p, 1080p which will require very fast connections, hell even sending photos these days with the average entry level camera being around 8 megapixels now uses a lot of traffic :)
Online gaming will change also, you will see much more content being moved if connections allow it etc.
If the connections are there, you will see things take advantage of it, just as no matter how fast graphics cards and cpu's get there will always be demand for faster.

Anyway, so yes, we do need faster speeds and of course much larger caps to do deal with the new uses of those faster speeds but I think they will go hand in hand.

One of your in house phone numbers has to be a telecom number.
Is that currently the case or are they both Vodafone?
If you have 2 distinct vodafone phone numbers then you can choose to move just the one phone number (As it sounds like all the wiring for 2 distinct phone numbers is in place)

Once you have moved your home number over to Telecom, then you can get Telecom Broadband and hence Big Time and cancel Vodafone broadband on the vodafone number (Or keep Vodafone Broadband if you really want). If they are seperate and different telephone numbers then they are seperate and distinct things.

So the big question is do you have 2 seperate in house phone numbers or is it just one phone number for the whole house?

Huh?

I thought your house was totally vodafone so why would you be changing your calling plan from telecom to vodafone?

Sorry for the confusion guys. What I meant to say was:

But that won't work since my home number is not connnected to the Telecom Network.

I'm going to wait until Vodafone provides a better broadband deal. Hopefully by the end of this year. My Dad has already said that if Vodafone aren't improving their broadband deals, he might be thinking to move back to Telecom or another ISP that can provide him a better deal with both Calling and Broadband Plans.

Thanks for the clarification John,

If your parents don't want to change your calling plan on your home phone number from Vodafone then it sort of shoots down your options in screaming flames and balls of fire, brimstone, lava, rocks and the such. (Unless you can afford to get a third line, WHICH WILL involve cabling from Telecom and I'd expect to be EXPENSIVE).
It's probably not a bad thing he's waiting, through you he will get knowledge of peoples experiences as more people get on the Big Time plan and how they go. (Unless he's on geekzone that is) :)

My Landline (Calling) - Vodafone
My FaxLine (Broadband) - Vodafone

My father doesn't want to change the Landline to Telecom

Seems from what I read his parents still want their Vodafone call plan on the home line, and the business/fax line is staying on Vodafone.
Seems like he's stuffed pretty much for a direct move of 1 line over.

If you have any kind of vpn to work or what not, be prepared for it to crawl at night.

Make sure you use offline caching and turn "working online" off at night, sync in the morning. It's incredibly slow. Might want to use slow connection detection if you're on a domain.

Guys im having bad latency to au gaming servers as well. Used to be ~100, now its like ~350.

Requested to have interleaving turned off, will come into effect tonight hopefully it fixes the issue. Been happening for two weeks (just switched from go large to big time last night hoping it would fix the issue)
