Am intrested in swaping to this new plan, However I like to play Cod4 etc. so am hesitant.

Please continue to post your results so I can see if they have done anything to improve :D

johnrutter: Sorry for the confusion guys. What I meant to say was:

-We don't want to change our calling plan from Vodafone to Telecom but we want our home number to be Telecom Broadband.

But that won't work since my home number is not connnected to the Telecom Network.

I'm going to wait until Vodafone provides a better broadband deal. Hopefully by the end of this year. My Dad has already said that if Vodafone aren't improving their broadband deals, he might be thinking to move back to Telecom or another ISP that can provide him a better deal with both Calling and Broadband Plans.

Great news guys yet again.

My dad has finally decided to switch our calling plan from Vodafone to Telecom.

The only downside to it is that free calls from home to BestMate mobiles on Vodafone is gone since I'm on telecom now.

...........I think this is correct if we switch from Vodafone to Telecom

But I guess broadband is more expensive than local and mobile calling and now unlimited broadband for us so I guess we are saving about $110 for overusage of broadband.

I'll let you guys know how the plan is coming along and if I'm finding it much better than Vodafone broadband. If theres anyone thats lives near the howick/dannemora/east auckland, let me know how connection speed is going.

Ok guys/girls ive been put over to the Big time plan from the go large plan "yes i got the very sad letter" after 4 years of go large im very sad to see it go it worked super for me.

I get these speeds no mater what time of the day on big time. downloading pictures kinda reminds me of the old dial up days.

0.46Mb/s down
0.10Mb/s up

On the Go large plan i got

3.50Mb/s down
0.13Mb/s up

I never abused it and i always had very nice usable speeds

I see i very very big difference. I also find that doing multipl things on Big time like say youtube and an online game is basically impossible they appear to cancel each other out and packets get blocked.

Is telecom offering a fair product? I think not. I am very mad that a company would remove a great plan all because it doesn't benefit the "Company" they don't wont us to have unlimited broad band they want to sell us highly restricted "unlimited" broad band thats completely unusable.

I loved go large.. Because i really did go large averaged about 50 to 90BG a month. and believe me this is basic usage youtube HD Second life many online games and documentaries all legal.

thanks telecom i now pay $10 more for less...

I will be changing over to "" internet provider in a few days.

I've been getting bad pings during peak hours, but the worst i've seen is around ~500 to the US and ~600 to London.. Combined with your low connect speeds I'd log a fault with telecom before I ragequit, believe it or not Big Time hasnt been all that bad (recent peaktime latency aside).

I did that already The guy at the help desk didn't even understand what ping time means :( he sounded worried and put me on hold many times during the call i guess to make out that he was actually working or some thing?. and he once again wanted me to collect download speed data over days and days that i have done countless times with telecom before witch did absolutely nothing. im sick and tied of being screwed by telecom. ADSL+2? dream on

Why would there be a problem with any hardware local or abroad when i just cam off Go large witch worked perfectly? I got respectible speeds wasnt fast but it was usable.

Im still going to change ISP's i would rather spend my money on bandwidth that i can at lest use.

Thomson TG585 Wireless Multi-User ADSL2+ Modem.

Is a decent router or should I purchase a different router?

Could you give me some recommendations of a router under $200?

That's very highly likely to NOT be a result of typical Bigtime performance. You should log a fault with the Telecom broadband helpdesk.

What exactly do you mean when you say "decent"?

Reliability wise it's most likely just as good as all the other consumer-grade routers you could buy.

The best (and arguably the only) method of increasing reliability of anything like this would be to:

1) Replace all capacitors with high quality Japanese ones (Rubycon/Sanyo/Panasonic etc)
2) Put heatsinks on the CPU and anything else that needs better cooling, modify enclosure suitably.

This is based on observations from cases involving routers (and many other things) at www.badcaps.net forums.

And yes, all your precious Linksys etc suffer the same problem.

Personally I find that badly made firmware is the main problem with routers. Badly written firmware will cause performance problems, badly designed interfaces will cause you headaches.

I can't comment on the Thomsons as I've never even seen one.

Overall, the best router in my mind would be one built on a stable and well designed platform, with the hardware modifications outlined above, and running a custom firmware like OpenWRT etc

Non-system disk or disk error. Replace and strike any key when ready.

Same thing happened to me. I was told that those speeds were acceptable to Telecom for Big Time.

No resolution, i was told to just accept it or change plans.

I was forced to change plans after suffering 10 days of those same 0.5Mbs speeds..

Once the plan change took place my speeds went back to normal.

Speeds and performance will increase getting something half decent. I went from one of these to a Cisco and wow, performance was a lot better.

Cannot update firmware on those things, all controlled by telecom.

My Favs are:

Zyxels (cheap ciscos)
Cisco (if you have cash to burn)

I have been using Telecom "Big Time" since Day 1, and it was rubbish for a few days, then it went pretty fast like 500kbps all the time. Now its like 0.3mbits at the most to anything international no matter what time of day, even 3am. Im finding at 11pm its unusable, it drops, times out, pings are like 1000ms internationally. Telecom are absolute rubbish. They say its optimized for everyone. What they have done is made it dial up for everyone. Also they say they don't throttle Local Traffic, but they must do, even with a local download its impossible to get over 200kbps. Some times downloads start at 200kbps and the speed steadily drops to 13kbps. I rang them and they say its fine, Come ON telecom, this is slower than slingshots 256/128k plan. Also I find torrents are faster than HTTP downloads. I thought they are trying to stop piracy, so why are torrents faster than legal downloads? this is just plain BullS**T TELECOM

I've noticed in the last few days from 6pm-11pm it's pretty rubbish. I have a vpn to work and it crawls at night. Just opening 100kb files is a mission.

They do need to look in to it.

They actually know more than pull out the power to your modem.
