Excuse my french, but they are a pile of shi!.

Speeds and performance will increase getting something half decent. I went from one of these to a Cisco and wow, performance was a lot better.

Cannot update firmware on those things, all controlled by telecom.

I don't think they are bad at all, after having a Dlink. The interface is nice and clean in my opinion and my router just works, hasn't skipped a beat and I've had it since they came out.

Not updating the firmware is probably a good thing from a non geek point of view, which is the majority of internet users.

My advice is to try it out, if you don’t link it, no harm done, it was included with the plan anyway.

Did anyone notice on the TV advert for it - she openly admits that during peek time they traffic shape P2P (fair enough) and also Gaming (What the hell?) - then she states that because those have been tackled your email won't be interrupted! thats crazy! I think that now hearing about it traffic shaping Gaming traffic puts me off completely.. i didnt think that would take that much bandwidth anyway.

Ummm, If people are serious about gaming why would they move to a plan that is obviously going to attract bulk downloaders etc?

You choose a plan to suit what you want to do. If you want to game and latency is important to you then you choose a different plan to one that has been made well aware to everyone that they are going to manage it etc.

You can't have everything :), if this plan was perfect for gaming + allowed unlimited internet then why would anyone go on the other plans??

They are just (sensinbly) covering their behind as they don't want to have to pay credit out customers over misleading advertising (over promising/under delivering) like what happened with Go Large.

Most gaming uses hardly any sustained bandwidth 5KB-20KB/s by design or less. Gaming on local / NZ servers is perfectly fine. It doesn't make sense for it to be managed intentionally.

Anyway the problem is not just gaming it's actually all international latency in peak time 6pm-11pm and it is affecting ALL international traffic

I believe they are well aware of it, it's a matter of waiting and seeing what changes if any they make to their network and the management rules to improve it.

Going to paraphrase from an intersting post on the gameplanet forums:

There's the mdr/ak5 and glf/tk10 hops which I believe are their two edge routers into the FIPD Xtra network. I reckon they are running the traffic management capabilities on both the edge routers and also the standalone external appliances managing the Go Large/Big Time links off each edge router.

Latency problems began for Big Time users routed via mdr/ak5 on 11 August, on the week of 14 September they redid P2P rules for a week which lowered latency but then they later made more changes which resulted in the problem coming back. Latency problems began for Big Time users routed via glf/tk10 on 20 September.

It's definitely caused by the rules/policy on one of the devices, or the interface between them :/, these latency problems didn't gradually crop up they just suddenly started occurring. The behaviour of international throughput speed and latency is just plain dodgy really.

Hey everyone - can people on Big Time let me know if they can stream from TVNZ OnDemand during peak hours and what YouTube performance is like during peak time as well?

Since switching to Big Time a couple of weeks ago I have found that almost all of my HTTP traffic seems to be shaped -- TVNZ OnDemand plays for about 20 seconds, then buffers for 20 seconds and repeats the cycle. Naturally it makes content unwatchable. Same with YouTube - last night it took over six minutes to buffer a 30second clip. I downloaded a video from YouTube to get a speed reading and it was clocked at 15KB/s versus around 600 - 700KB/s on my old plan.

I know that traffic is managed on Big Time during peak times, but I wasn't expecting it to be managed to the point where I can no longer even use services like YouTube and TVNZ. Even downloading Windows Live Movie Maker from Microsoft.com took the best part of an hour despite only being around 120MB, and photos on Flickr trickle through line-by-line like the dial-up days.

Is what I'm experiencing normal compared to what others are seeing? I would love to stay on this plan for the unlimited bandwidth, but not if it means you can't enjoy the services that broadband was made for.

[UPDATE] - Telecom have replied to the email I sent them about it, they say they have escalated my issue to be fixed so obviously it is not normal! Here's hoping they can fix it. Pretty quick response.

At peak times Big time is garbage for the likes of new Youtube, ondemand and even the videos on stuff and HZ Herald. If the Youtube is cached it is OK, but if you like to see the latest news etc wait 24 hours or just watch yesterdays news, then Big time is the plan for you.
Its just like a 10% discount on yesterdays news paper.

I believe Local traffic isn't shaped, the problem is your TVNZ on demand content is actually coming from the Citylink's US mirror.

Citylink who host TVNZ on demand don't interconnect with Telecom and Telecom don't peer at the Citylink run peering exchanges APE and WIX.

Basically it's politics.. the two biggest ISP's (Telecom and Telstra) don't want to pay to peer at APE/WIX and the biggest local content provider (Citylink) don't want to pay to interconnect with Telecom and Telstra.

Youtube should be fine, make sure you're using Telecom DNS servers in your router/modem and on your PC (rather than opendns).

If you are getting slow youtube and you know it's supposed to be cached (eg: it's a popular video that you or someone has visited before) then perhaps there is another problem like exchange or backhaul congestion in your area.

I gave up trying to watch live tv internet channels, they just spend most of the time buffering and then a few seconds of tv then buffering again..

youtube is ok for cached stuff...

but yeah id say if you want live streams etc and latency is important you might want to go with another plan first.. you can always switch to another telecom plan if this one isn't what you hoped..

I think its funny that telecom don't back themselves enough to wave the 12 month penalty fee for people that want to leave. If they were really confident of their products they wouldn't have that there :)
I think some people are expecting a bit too much from a plan like this though.

Can't say I'm having any issues with gaming within NZ. On ClearNet servers I am pinging anywhere between 8-40ms with few ping spikes or degradation of connectivity experienced. YouTube, while watchable, loading speeds can slow down but it's still better than the speeds I've seen on TelstraClear Cable Network.

Thus far I am really pleased with BigTime! It's a great plan. I never have to check my usage. I can connect via ADSL2+ syncing at about 17Mb/s Down / 1Mb/s Up.

We have no problems at all with bigtime here since I changed from Xnet 15 days ago..
Web browsing is fine, youtube streams and everything else works...

Well, we have also used 60 gig in 15 days which speaks for itself ;-)
